yakeru you na aka de
With a Burning Red
Vocals: Ranko
Lyrics: Comp
Arranged by: Comp
Album: Pop (ポップ)
Circle: Butaotome (豚乙女)
Event: Reitaisai 11 [RTS11]
Original Theme: Green-Eyed Jealousy [
The theme this time is jealousy. Which is understandable, since it’s Parsee’s theme we’re talking about… Anyway, this song is a fairly straight retelling of the legend of the Hashihime, or bridge princess, which Parsee is based on. According to the legend, a jealous woman, who was abandoned by her ex-lover for another woman, prayed to the gods to become a demon. The gods (surprisingly) listened to her, and gave her detailed instructions on how to do so. Listen to the song with this bit of backstory in mind…

yaketa sora yaketa minamo
akaku somari subete nomikonde
koi shigure aoku awaku ochiru kienai nigami nokoshite
The sky was burnt, and the water’s surface was burnt…
Everything is dyed red, and swallowed up in it.
Love rains down. It falls lightly, palely, leaving behind a bitterness that does not disappear. (1)
are ga taranu kore ga taranai ya to
onore semeru omoi yagate netami e to sugata wo kaeteku
That is lacking, and this is lacking as well…
Eventually, my feelings of self-loathing change their form to jealousy…
mou torimodosenai 「hito no」 naraba isso
yakeru you na aka de nuritsubushitai yo
mitasarenu kokoro mitasarenai mama de
hiraita hitomi ni nani mo utsuranai
It cannot be undone anymore. If I am to be ‘someone else’s,’ then
I would rather paint everything with a burning red!
My unappeased heart will remain unappeased,
And in these open eyes, nothing is reflected…
aseta yume aseta keshiki
In this faded dream, and in this faded landscape,
Tomorrow and the day after will be the same, I guess…
nani mo umanu doku to wakattete mo
samishisa yori kanashimi yori mada itakunai kara oboreru
Though I understand that nothing is born from spite,
I wallow in it, as unlike in loneliness and sorrow, I feel no pain.
mou yasashiku fureru koto ga dekinai nara
dare mo furenu you ni koroshite ageru yo
mienai ashita wa mienai mama de ii
kawaita hitomi wa sotto tojita mama
If I cannot touch you tenderly anymore,
I shall kill you, so you will be unable to touch anyone.
I am fine if that unseen tomorrow remains unseen.
My parched eyes remain closed, softly…
mou torimodosenai 「hito no」 naraba isso
yakeru you na aka de nuritsubushitai
mitasarenu kokoro mitasarenai mama de
midori no hitomi ni nani mo utsusenai
It cannot be undone anymore. If I am to be ‘someone else’s,’ then
I would rather paint everything with a burning red!
My unappeased heart will remain unappeased,
And in these green eyes, nothing can be reflected…

(1) It’s probably… not worth a translation note, but the rain referred to here is a specific type of drizzle, which occurs in late autumn/early winter. It has a very… poetic nuance
Mh, a thing I noticed about this one: “yakeru” can mean either “to burn” (fitting for the red), but also “to be jealous” (fitting for Parsee). Do you think it can be put in some way in the translation or is unrelated? (red burning of jealousy… wow)

I’ll have to think about that one! I missed that while I was translating it >_< If only yakeru was in kanji – that would make it much clearer… 😦
