Update (13 October 2016): Updated some parts of the chorus following 空見りんき’s suggestions.

An older BUTAOTOME track. I probably said this last time, but this is definitely one of my favourite BUTAOTOME albums! Of course, I could say the same thing about a bunch of their albums, so I guess that isn’t really saying much. Sometimes I wonder how many BUTAOTOME songs haven’t been translated yet. Ideally, I’d like to go through and do the rest of the untranslated ones someday…

Anyway, the lyrics this time are whimsical, dealing with love. It kind of reminds me of てのひら || Palm (perhaps it’s the other way round – Palm reminds me of this track…)

Translation

Even those clouds of tears in the sky of my heart –
If you were to blow them, they would surely fly away somewhere.

The shadows lengthen, and I can hear those laughing voices.
The meaning in this – just that would be good.

Through the few words we exchanged, my heart was made to dance.
It would be good if those days could continue – if only those days could continue…

Even those clouds of tears in the sky of my heart –
If you were to blow them, they would surely fly away somewhere.
You won’t do it always, but you’ll show it to me sometimes.
If I can see you smile, then we can live like this, always.

The shadows begin to run, playing in the moonlit night.

The promise I made with you is shut away in my heart.
It would be good if those days could continue – if only those days could continue…

When the rain falls during a cold night,
I’ll dry you off if you get wet.
You won’t do it always, but then you’ll suddenly show it to me
If I see you looking sad, then my heart will tighten.

Even those clouds of tears in the sky of my heart –
If you were to blow them, they would surely fly away somewhere.
You won’t do it always, but you’ll show it to me sometimes.
If I can see you smile, then we can live like this, always.

We can live like this, always.

It never occurred to me that it is “I” that smiles here,
because I thought the theme would be “you” who make “I” happy.

Then I would translate the lyrics above to (, borrowing your translation):
: You won’t do it always, but you’ll show me it sometimes.
: If I can see your smile, then I can live like this, always.

    What do you think?

Looking through it again, I can see that your version makes more sense. I agree that it’s weird for ‘I’ to be smiling here – 見せる must have thrown me off somewhere along the line.

居られるよ makes me feel like there’s still an element of ‘we’ at the end [“we can live like this, always.”] but I will definitely change the earlier sections. Thank you so much for pointing that out! 😀

        Thanks for your reply.

        > 居られるよ makes me feel like there’s still an element of ‘we’ at the end
        > [“we can live like this, always.”]

That could be similar to my interpretation.

I supplemented omitted words in Japanese as below:
        : (貴方の)笑顔が見れたなら (私は)ずっとこのまま(貴方の側で幸せ)で居られるよ

Now there is 「私」 and 「貴方」 in the latter sentence
and so I think the subject of the latter can be “we”.

I know there is no “true” answer in interpretations and translations
and moreover I am a beginner in English.
But I enjoy seeing how others interpret or translate.

I hope you will enjoy too.

I enjoy reading other interpretations, too, so thank you for commenting! 🙂 One of the challenges of translating song lyrics is the number of the words that are omitted… I’m still learning Japanese, so I appreciate any opportunity to learn more and correct any errors of interpretation 😀

These lyrics are so beautiful, I must thank you so much. This was incredibly touching with the meaning behind it, you have no idea!!

On another note, I still have a rather simple question: “貴方” does not tell us what gender the person has the singer is talking to, right?

You’re welcome 🙂 Buta-Otome delivers once again! But yeah, I should have said something about that – the anata (貴方) used is the gender-neutral one.
