The phrase 足が無い (ashi ga nai – no legs) can also be used metaphorically to mean “I’ve got no means of travel, or no way of moving forward”. It looks like the speaker literally has no legs this time, though…

Translation

Unnoticed, they began to follow me.
When I realised it, we were together.
What should I call this darkness?
I had lost my way with no legs.

The next day, I sprouted legs
and it was so easy to walk.
It felt like someone was laughing at me.
They were looking at me—I had become so happy.

I wore a red ribbon in my hair
But you remained black.
We’ll be together forever, just like this.
You’re my dark friend.

Laugher echoes in my ears.
Just cut it out already, okay?
Soon, I’ll leave this city.
We’ll be a pair from tomorrow.

You’ve got to go through this forest
to reach the neighbouring town.
The deep forest is coloured black.
Soon, night will come calling.

When I unfastened my red ribbon,
my golden hair was sparkling.
Let’s spend the night here.
You’re my dark friend.

The laughter in my ears is close.
Just cut it out already, okay?
After all, I’ll arrive at that city soon.
The darkness began to move…

When I awoke, I felt something oppressive—
Your colours were spreading.
When I knew that meant I was being digested,
my shrieks spread through the forest.

The laughter in my ears is right here.
They’re laughing now, for sure.
The legs that made me so happy have vanished,
leaving behind despair.
