Translation

There was no way anybody would know the faint heart
hidden behind your pale face.

Pale moonlight shines on the narrow path.
When I aimlessly went down it
I saw a lake illuminated by the moon, reflecting the surrounds.
I met you at that ridge.

The moon is full on matsuyoi, the waiting night. (1)
I tire of waiting for you, my beloved.

I float a boat on the lake, and two figures are reflected on its surface.
My passionate gaze rests on the moon, sent rippling by the boat.

I was delirious from my beating heart and my excitement
and I was blind.
Like the hopping rabbits and playing children
I was ignorant.

The moon wanes. It is a fukemachi moon. (2)
I tire of waiting for you, my beloved.

I float alone in the stygian lake at midnight.
The children weep beneath their coldness, wanting the moon.

There was no way anybody would know the faint heart
hidden behind your pale face.

There was no way anybody would know.

Translator’s notes

(2) 更待 (fukemachi) refers to the night of the 20th day of the lunar month. On this night, the moon rises later than usual. For more information, see this resource.
