senseeshonaru no toujitsu,
terebi mo netto mo zenbu denki kieta

That sensational day,
The internet and all the televisions went out.
I had a look outside, and all the traffic and street lights were grey
and only the cars were busily running.

usugurai konbini wa hayaimono-gachi no ubaiai
konbini no nii-chan ga chirashi no ura ni dekkaku “heiten” tte kaiteru

Everyone’s scrambling at the gloomy convenience store. The quickest one wins!
The guy at the register was writing ‘closed’ in big letters beneath a leaflet.

yuugata tte konna ni haiiro datta kke
soshite minna haiiro ni iki iki shite iru ne

Was evening always this ashen?
Everyone bustles about. They, too, are ashen.

semai heya ni denkyuu dake ga hikatteru
kyanpu dane, bouken dane, amatta denchi de rajio o narashite
“joukyou wa kaimetsu-teki” nante iwareta tte pin to konai

In my small room, only a light bulb is shining.
It’s like I’m camping. It’s like an adventure. I put the radio on with the leftover batteries.
“The situation is catastrophic.” That’s what they said, but it doesn’t hit home.

yoru tte konna ni makkura datta kke
sekai no owari mitai nanoni kikikan ga nai yo

Was night always this dark?
It’s like the end of the world, but I feel no sense of danger.

senseeshonaru no toujitsu, senseeshonaru no toujitsu,
senseeshonaru no toujitsu sa

It’s a sensational day, it’s a sensational day,
It’s a sensational day!

senseeshonaru no yokujitsu,
kuzureta heya o katadzukeru
ma mo naku denki mo tootta
jouhou ga tairyou ni oshiyoseru
tomodachi no tomodachi no machi ga atokata mo nai
sore demo akarui kimochi da, denki mo tsuita shi

The sensational next day,
I put my untidy room in order.
Before long, the electricity was connected
and I was overwhelmed by news.
A friend of a friend’s town had vanished without a trace.
Still, I feel pretty cheerful. After all, I have electricity now.

haya baya to kinjo no suupaa mo hiraita
shouhin ga nakute dono tana mo karappo nanode
ichiretsu oki ni shame o totta

The neighbourhood supermarket opened promptly.
They had no stock, and all their shelves were bare
so I took photos, row by row, with my phone.

kono fuben wa izure owaru daro tte
yotei chouwa no tariki hongan ni mi o yudanete

Thinking that this inconvenience must end sooner or later,
I left it up to others to do what’s expected.

senseeshonaru no yokujitsu, senseeshonaru no yokujitsu,
senseeshonaru no yokujitsu sa

It’s a sensational day, it’s a sensational day,
It’s a sensational day!

senseeshonaru no yokushuu, sake no sakana ni omoi genjitsu o katatta
senseeshonaru no yokugetsu, minna de kenryoku o okotta
senseeshonaru no nenmatsu, kibou ni mukatte to terebi ga utatta

The sensational next week, we spoke about that heavy reality over drinks.
The sensational next month, we all reprimanded the authorities.
At the sensational end of the year, the TVs declared that we should faceforwards with hope.

senseeshonaru no yokutoshi,
kankei no nai bokutachi wa tada no nichijou ni modotta
terebi mo marude kyonen o wasureta you
kecchaku no nai mama okizari ni sareta, sabaku no you na hibi

The sensational next year,
We, who weren’t involved, returned to our daily lives.
Even the TVs seemed to have forgotten about last year.
We were left behind without a conclusion, during days that felt like deserts.

nie kirazu, nie kirazu, kimochi warui mama tsudzuiteku
kutsuu no hito ga mada uchi hishigareru yoko de
tonari no hito ga odayaka ni sugosechatte iru
senseeshonaru no yokutoshi sa

We continued to live half-heartedly, feeling unpleasant.
Those who suffered are still stricken, lying prone
and their neighbours wind up living easy.
It’s certainly a sensational year after!

senseeshonaru no yokuyokutoshi…

The sensational year after that…

The title was the toughest thing to translate. We just have ‘shikan’ written in hiragana, and hardly any clues to help us make a decision. ‘Shikan’ means countless things, and out of all those things… I originally chose ‘leering’ (視姦), and then moved to ‘flaccidity’ (弛緩).

It feels like the speaker discovers a dead body, but doesn’t want to report it because they know how some tabloids like to say bad things about people after they die. Then, they see someone who’s just died and decide not to report it.

I’d love to hear more interpretations of the word しかん and how it fits into the last stanza! I mean, I changed my interpretation because somebody suggested 弛緩. It’s always worthwhile listening to other interpretations.

dareka ga shinda.
shiranai hito-tachi ga waratta.
“shinde seisei shita” to hakisuteta.

Someone died.
People who didn’t know them sneered.
“They died and became pure.” They spat those words out.

dareka ga shinda.

Someone died.
The tragic magazines sneered.
Upon solemn pages, they jeered: “We’ve run out of material.”

kyou mo tachiatta.
“shinimashita” nante tsugetakunai, tsugetakunai noni
naze shinda nda?

I fought with them again today.
I don’t want to tell them that he died, I don’t want to at all.
Why did he die?
While only his life remains cut off, he will be killed by society once more.

kyou mo tachiatte,
watashi wa kyou mo meshi o taberu

I fight them again today
and I will eat my food again today.

tachiyotta sono hi no raamenya wa
totemo niku no aji ga shita kedo,
totemo oishikatta nda

I stopped by a ramen restaurant that day.
The food tasted strongly of meat
but it was really delicious.

watashi wa, oishikatta.
sore ga shiawase datta nda.

I thought it was delicious.
It made me happy.

yokotawatta sono karada no shikan o mita ki ga shite,

I felt like I saw that body, lying down, go flaccid
so I left that room behind.
