Translation

That sensational day,
The internet and all the televisions went out.
I had a look outside, and all the traffic and street lights were grey
and only the cars were busily running.

Everyone’s scrambling at the gloomy convenience store. The quickest one wins!
The guy at the register was writing ‘closed’ in big letters beneath a leaflet.

Was evening always this ashen?
Everyone bustles about. They, too, are ashen.

In my small room, only a light bulb is shining.
It’s like I’m camping. It’s like an adventure. I put the radio on with the leftover batteries.
“The situation is catastrophic.” That’s what they said, but it doesn’t hit home.

Was night always this dark?
It’s like the end of the world, but I feel no sense of danger.

It’s a sensational day, it’s a sensational day,
It’s a sensational day!

The sensational next day,
I put my untidy room in order.
Before long, the electricity was connected
and I was overwhelmed by news.
A friend of a friend’s town had vanished without a trace.
Still, I feel pretty cheerful. After all, I have electricity now.

The neighbourhood supermarket opened promptly.
They had no stock, and all their shelves were bare
so I took photos, row by row, with my phone.

Thinking that this inconvenience must end sooner or later,
I left it up to others to do what’s expected.

It’s a sensational day, it’s a sensational day,
It’s a sensational day!

The sensational next week, we spoke about that heavy reality over drinks.
The sensational next month, we all reprimanded the authorities.
At the sensational end of the year, the TVs declared that we should face forward with hope.

The sensational next year,
We, who weren’t involved, returned to our daily lives.
Even the TVs seemed to have forgotten about last year.
We were left behind without a conclusion, during days that felt like deserts.

We continued to live half-heartedly, feeling unpleasant.
Those who suffered are still stricken, lying prone
and their neighbours wind up living easy.
It’s certainly a sensational year after!

The sensational year after that…

thank you for doing a song by hikkie-p, they’re my absolute favorite producer right now. i know it’s technically correct given the meaning of 灰 but i feel like “ashen” is a little too poetic of a word for the tone of this song, especially since “gray” is an equally valid translation.
anyway i would kill for more translations of songs from this album!!!

Thanks for translating this song. I always thought this song was pretty darkly humorous, even among Hikkie-P’s other usually biting and just plain dark songs.
