It’s an almost full moon, but it’s really almost. Basically, it’s the moon that you see on the 14th day of the lunar calendar. The day after is a full moon.

The title sounds the same as 希望の月 (kibou no tsuki), which means ‘The Moon of Hope’. It’s really cool how we see things like that in Japanese. We also see a fairly standard alternative reading for 宇宙 (uchuu, space) – sora, which is the same as 空 (sky).

flying through the night

flying through the night

flying through the night

Translation

The new moon is dyed indigo in the starry sky above.
I stand still in destructive darkness.
The chronicle travels round and round the crescent moon.
I trod on the asphalt and looked up.
I spread my wings, aiming high in space.

I looked through my opera glasses and, reflected at the bottom of the atmosphere,
was a flickering light.

I’ll ride the winds of the crescent moon and fly around space.
I’ll tear off a slither of moonlight. Now!
A flash of light tears the night to pieces.
Flying through the night.

I see the waxing moon from high ground.
Our silhouettes were illuminated in the moonlit night.
We sprawl in those beautiful curves.
We are drowsy, and we
consciously have an endless dream.

Moonlight pours down, passing through the gaps between clouds.
I race through space.

I’ll pass through the distant night and fly about the sky.
I’ll tear off a slither of moonlight. Now!
When the moon is a perfect circle, look—it’s being made whole.
Flying through the night.

Through light, I gaze upon the world of a single second.
I tie the brightness together.

Tsukuyomi controls time. They stretch their arms in the darkness.
I’ll tear off a slither of moonlight. Now!
A flash of light tears the night to pieces.
Fly through the night!

Infused by an almost full moon, I escape the night sky.
I’ll tear off a slither of moonlight. Now!
Time, continuing for eternity, illuminates the starry sky.
Flying through the night.
