The word used for hell here (黄泉 – yomi) is neither paradise or firey hell – it’s just a place where you carry out a kind of gloomy existence as a spirit forever. That’s a massive oversimplification, so please visit this resource if you’d like to learn more about the different Japanese hells.

Also 月夜がめくれて in the first stanza gives me a really weird mental image. I was looking at some examples of ‘が めくれて’, and they were mostly linked to things sticking up (like a collar). I went a bit further and got ‘peeled off’ – but something like ‘flicking through (e.g. the pages of a book)’ could be more appropriate.

Somebody on the Internet noted that this song depicts the world of ‘death’ in a humourous fashion, which is very much like Kikuo. This possibly explains things like “Hell’s Inn” and “the neck pillow of Paradise and Heaven.”

Tatakai tsukareta heishi ga shizuka ni koshikake
Yasunde kieru basho
Kumo ga orite kite sa kirigakure
Hora tsukiyo ga mekurete niokunen

This is where soldiers tired of fighting take a seat
then rest and vanish.
The clouds have descended. All is hidden in fog.
Look—the moonlit nights have been peeled off across two hundred million years…

Oide owareta no usagi yo
saa ichido wa oide ya hoshi no yado
Iriguchi wa soko no tsuno orite sugu

Come, o rabbit that was pursued!
Come at least once to the Star Inn.
The entrance is just down the corner.

Tsuki kara onsen waite iru kara dakara
Kaerenu toko made oritoide

A hot spring is gushing from the moon,
So descend until you can’t go back.

Koko wa banbutsu reichou yumi miru hatagoya
Youkoso okoshiya yomi no yado
Ubugi o kisemasho ushi no koku
Attakakute yasashikute

This is the inn dreamed of by all creation and humanity.
Welcome—come to Hell’s Inn.
Let’s wear a newborn’s clothes at 2am.
So warm, so tender…

Aa kanashii ikimono atsumaru yo
Hora gokuraku tengoku kubi makura
Minami no hanataba sakasete sa
Namida no amatsuyu kirei ni kazarimasu

Ah… Sad beings are all gathering.
Look—Here’s the neck pillow of Paradise and Heaven.
I’m making the southern bouquet bloom.
I adorn it with rain and dew formed from tears.

Sen’nin kuwaete yomi no ana
Ichiman’nin nomikomi yomi no kuni
Hora shizuka da ne demo kanashii ne
Demo anmari kurushikunai nda ne

Hell’s hole holds a thousand people.
The realm of the dead swallows up ten thousand people.
See how quiet it is? Still, it’s sorrowful
but it’s not that painful.

Kokoro ni pokkari kaze no ana
Nete samete mo minami no tabibito ga
Goshinboku kurinuita fuefuku yo
Itsumade mo hibiite yamanai yo

An air hole gapes in my heart.
Whether asleep or awake, the southern travellers
blow flutes made from pulled-out sacred trees.
They will play their music forever more.

Naisho no otakara chizu no michi
Anata dake ni kikaseru yume no yado
Yume fuwafuwa yume yume utagawanu
Hitonemuri de gussuri niokunen

This is the path laid out in the secret treasure map.
I’ll tell only you about the Dream Inn.
Buoyant in a dream, you do not doubt even a little.
You lay sound asleep for two hundred million years…

Koko wa banbutsu reichou yumi miru hatagoya
Youkoso okoshiya yomi no yado
Tabun chikaku ni kita kamo shirenai
Sabishii kedo kurushikunai soko wa

This is the inn dreamed of by all creation and humanity.
Welcome—come to Hell’s Inn.
You’ve probably arrived nearby.
It’s a lonely place, but not so painful.

Kanashii ikimono atsumaru yo
Hora gokuraku tengoku kubi makura
Kore onamida choudai joutaijou
Itsudemo todokeru junbi wa dekitemasu

Ah… Sad beings are all gathering.
Look—Here’s the neck pillow of Paradise and Heaven.
A written invitation requests tears.
I can deliver it at any time. I’m prepared.
