This track was used as the opening theme for defiant of shrine maiden

In between phrases, 布留部 由良由良止 布留部 (furube yura yura to furube) is chanted. It’s an excerpt from a longer piece that goes by many different names including ひふみ祓詞 (hifumi no haraekotoba) 布瑠の言 (furu no koto), or 神言 (kamigoto).

I found an English reference to it in a book called The Sacred Science of Ancient Japan. According to mythology, if you gather 10 Sacred Treasures (十種神宝) around you and chant their names while swaying back and forth, the sacred power is enough to restore the dead to life. Unfortunately an authoritative translation of the excerpt does not exist.

Translation

Life, be in full bloom!

I look at the world of humans, which has fallen from its past glory, and dance.
O hands of the false god, play with spun history!
The moon burns red and the beast awakens in its cradle.
I devote myself to forgotten logic.

She severs a sole emotion and bond for the sake of still-trembling lives.
The sad shrine maiden holds a sole duty in her hands. She still cannot cry.

I observe temporary peace and lapsing reality and dance.
The world I reached and punishments coming undone flow through my hands.
The beast tears off its chains and pierces through the black sky.
I fly through a forgotten illusion, staring at butterflies.

She encounters and parts, only once, for the sake of a world at ease.
Holding a unique wish in her hands, the fated shrine maiden trembles.

She severs a sole emotion and bond for the sake of still-trembling lives.
The sad shrine maiden holds a sole duty in her hands. She still cannot cry.

Life, be in full bloom!

I didn’t expect this song to be finally translated, thank you for your hard work, Releska!
Also, it’s not included in the lyrics but there is a repeating chanting between the verses which I think is 布留部 由良由良止 布留部. Correct me if I’m wrong, that’s some kind of spell or prayer, so I believe it’s worth mentioning in the lyrics too.

You’re welcome! (^_^) Thanks for pointing out the extra chant as well, I’ve added that information to the description. You’re right about it being a prayer – unfortunately I couldn’t track down an authoritative interpretation or translation of it…
