A note about the title (thanks aa for raising it!) – it also refers to things that happen beneath the surface or ‘behind closed doors’, so to speak. I went for a literal translation because of the numerous aquatic references throughout the song.

LOVE
I

HATE
I

Translation

The crowd swims through the days in a hurry.
I’m observing them from the corner of my eye.

I found you, left behind.
We drew close and laughed as dawn broke.

Sweet and light
expectations.
A persecution complex.

My feelings won’t reach.
I awaken from an illusion.

Love,
LOVE.
I. (1)
They don’t exist.

My pulse bursts its banks.
When it pauses, I can hear the static.

Love,
HATE.
I.
This story is about them.

The joint depth of our hearts is so deep
all I can do is look up.

I gently touch
underwater love
and my violently undulating feelings.
They melt into my body.
Underwater darkness
is lit up by your smile.
I can feel your warmth.

I get a bit tired
and a dark feeling surfaces in the moonlit night.
I lack words,
lack courage.
I left everything in the deep sea.

The joint depth of our hearts
is where I drown and flounder, falling vertically.

Underwater love
and my violently undulating feelings
are like ice cream melting in the August breeze.
Underwater darkness
is lit up by your smile.
I can feel it. It hurts.

The cold air passes me by.
It enters my lungs, then I spit it out and cry.
You ran off into the starry night. I touched your tears.

I gently touch
underwater love
and my violently undulating feelings.
They melt into my body.
Underwater darkness
is lit up by your smile.
I can feel your warmth.

Translator’s note

(1) The three lines are all pronounced the same way – あい (ai). This happens again later in the song, with HATE written instead of LOVE.

  1. Hello Releska! Nice translation as always ^^

I wanted to ask about the title. Isn’t it a play between how 水面下 means both “underwater” and “behind closed doors”? The lyrics always gave me the feeling of two lovers having to keep their relationship a secret, particularly since the picture shows two girls…

Or does “underwater” have the same double meaning in English? If that’s the case, I apologize orz

But either way, thank you so much for all you do! I hope you have a happy new 2022!

    1. Thanks for your comment! And you’re absolutely right about the title, which has a hidden meaning. I’ve added a little note at the start to clarify.

I went for the literal translation (‘underwater’) because I felt it was consistent with the song’s numerous aquatic references, and I didn’t want to lose that in the translation.

I struggled to find an English word that captured both meanings of the Japanese word, though looking back I wonder if something like ‘beneath the surface’ or ‘submerged’ would have been better.

Regardless, thanks for the comment, and I hope you have a happy new year too!
