There’s actually an MMD PV out there for this song. It implies that Seija is actually talking about herself at the start, and she’s talking about Shinmyoumaru in the final stanza. There aren’t many clues in the original lyrics, so I played it safe this time and went with a ‘safer’ translation.

Sometimes they meet. Sometimes they fight. Sometimes they help. Sometimes they deceive.
Humans are all honest. Humans are all wicked.
They answer this and that. They forget the answers.

This is the other part to Shocking Love. As a bit of a refresher, the two songs are based on the manga Emperor of the Rising Sun (‘Hi Izuru Tokoro no Tenshi’) by Ryoko Yamagishi. In the manga, Shoutoku (a.k.a Toyosatomimi no Miko) is portrayed as “a scheming, cross-dressing homosexual with psychic powers,” who experiences unrequited love for Soga no Emishi (a.k.a Soga no Tojiko). This part is clearly told from Shoutoku’s point of view.

In regards to the title, 凡愚 (‘bongu’) literally means ‘foolish commoner.’ In this case, I simply translated it as ‘foolish’ because it’s the foolishness of Shoutoku that is emphasised throughout the song, rather than their status as a ‘commoner.’ If you wanted to include both meanings, the title would become something like ‘A God, who is a Foolish Commoner.’

Whether I wish it or not, they are all projected before me.

Even so, why is it that yours are the only ones I cannot see?

I listened to tomorrow, breathing shallowly.

Even so, why is it that yours is the only one I cannot hear?

My ego, which was born from love and truth,
Is too wicked. I cannot save anyone…

The land of the rising sun’s distorted song
Will not reach your heart!
This foolish ‘God,’ who made a mistake in ‘love,’
Has been put to sleep in the land of the setting sun…

Based on a Tweet from Ranko, this song and its companion 凡愚なカミ (‘A Foolish God’) are based on the manga Emperor of the Rising Sun (‘Hi Izuru Tokoro no Tenshi’) by Ryoko Yamagishi. The manga apparently portrays Shoutoku (a.k.a Toyosatomimi no Miko) as “a scheming, cross-dressing homosexual with psychic powers,” dealing with his unrequited love for Soga no Emishi (a.k.a Soga no Tojiko). The lyrics are a bit more ambiguous this time, but keep that in mind as you listen. As usual, the pronouns in most parts have been interpreted in.

Now, for a quick note about the title: it’s split up into two words, ‘shourai’ (焦雷) and ‘renbo’ (恋慕). ‘Shourai’ has no meaning in Japanese, but in Chinese, it’s used to refer to a loud thunderstorm. There’s an element of ‘burning’ to it as well, but I decided to go with ‘Shocking’ to stay more in line with its Chinese meaning. ‘Renbo,’ on the other hand,  simply means love/attachment in Japanese.

akaru sugiru yoru no owari ga miataranu
hajimari no kotoba wa seki wo kitte ochita

The end of that night, which is too bright, cannot be found.
My first words broke their dam and burst out.

hanete utatta shoujo wa itsumo naite bakari iru kara
kumo wo dokashite tomo ni mairou senkou no sono saki he

That girl, who leaped around and sang, was always doing nothing but crying.
So, I removed those clouds, and together we went towards the place beyond that glimmer.

mawaru mawaru kurukuru ue mo shita mo naku naru
subete wa yume no naka de tokete iku

Turning, turning, whirling, whirling – up and down disappear.
Everything begins to dissolve inside that dream, and
We return to the beginning.

tasuke wo motometemo dare ni mo kikoenai
kokoro no koe dake wa anata ni todokanai

Even if I seek help, nobody can hear me.
Only the voice of my heart will not reach you…

odorikurutta shoujo wa susumu chidoriashi de furafura
otosu kaminari kogetsuita koi warawanaide mou iya

That girl, who danced in ecstasy, tottered forward, unsteady on her feet.
She struck me with lightning, and I was scorched with love – don’t laugh, I can’t stand it anymore!

moeru moeru omoi ni uso mo yami mo kiesaru
akumu ga kasa wo mashite nomareteku

In those burning, burning thoughts, lies and darkness disappear.
That nightmare increases in volume, and swallows everything up;
The door has been shut.

mawaru mawaru kurukuru ue mo shita mo nakunaru

Turning, turning, whirling, whirling – up and down disappear.
Everything begins to dissolve inside that dream, and
We return to the beginning.

Once upon a time, light was a blessing.
As the light is white, white became virtue and was worshipped in turn…

Aah, clouds drift in my heart.
Aah, I leave those pure white clouds to the wind.

I tell you, this world is a mass of sins.
It is difficult to be pure white,
So, it is okay to be afraid…

kurikaesareru meguru mawaru karafuru ni

It is repeated, and it goes ‘round and ‘round colourfully…
So, I clearly divide them:
Black paths. White paths. Paths.
