Based on a Tweet from Ranko, this song and its companion 凡愚なカミ (‘A Foolish God’) are based on the manga Emperor of the Rising Sun (‘Hi Izuru Tokoro no Tenshi’) by Ryoko Yamagishi. The manga apparently portrays Shoutoku (a.k.a Toyosatomimi no Miko) as “a scheming, cross-dressing homosexual with psychic powers,” dealing with his unrequited love for Soga no Emishi (a.k.a Soga no Tojiko). The lyrics are a bit more ambiguous this time, but keep that in mind as you listen. As usual, the pronouns in most parts have been interpreted in.
Now, for a quick note about the title: it’s split up into two words, shourai (焦雷) and renbo (恋慕). ‘Shourai’ has no meaning in Japanese, but in Chinese, it’s used to refer to a loud thunderstorm. There’s an element of ‘burning’ to it as well, but I decided to go with ‘Shocking’ to stay more in line with its Chinese meaning. Renbo, on the other hand, simply means love/attachment in Japanese.
