The cover art gives us a very strong “Seija disrupts society” vibe, but that album title…

As for the song itself, the title references a ‘pair of trees.’ However, it’s also a shortened form of the word for a sal tree In Buddhist mythology, Buddha died lying between two sal trees. The sal tree also appears in The Tale of the Heike, and its brief flowering period is a symbol of how glory is fleeting. Two sal trees, two Tsukumo sisters…

hara hara to mau wa usubeni oboroyo ni kirameite
kikoeru ka omae no tame ni tsumugi dasu gokujou no shirabe
yura yura to hashiru hamon wa ikue ni mo kasanatte
kikoeru ka natsukashi karou nando demo kanadete yaru kara

Light pink flowers flutter and dance down. They glisten in the misty moonlit night.
Can you hear it? I spun the finest melody for your sake.
Ripples run unstably. They overlap over and over again.
Can you hear it? Perhaps it’s nostalgic. I’ll play this melody countless times.

ima wa nemure

Now, sleep…

zawa zawa to mau wa kagerou oboroyo ni yurameite
hiso hiso to tsutau hamon wa ikueni mo kasanatte
kikoeru ka osoroshi karou nando demo utatte yaru kara

The dragonflies rustle and dance. They waver in the misty moonlit night.
Can you hear it? The blade is twisted. One of the pair performs in the silence.
Ripples travel, whisper-like. They overlap over and over again.
Can you hear it? Perhaps it’s terrifying. I’ll sing this melody countless times.

ima wa nemure mimi no itami ga kieru made

Now, sleep. Sleep until the pain in your ears disappears.

Malice is a fleeting blade gathering near my strings. The sal trees, gone mad in a spring night, laugh.

fura fura to biwa o sagashite chuu o kaku hosoi ude
shiranu darou tsukumo to ka shita waga sugata meshiita sono me wa
kira kira to suikyou no you oboroyo o utsushidasu

They search for their biwa with no goal in mind. Their narrow arms draw in space.
Perhaps they are unaware of their form, having become a tsukumogami. They are blind.
Like the shining water’s surface, their eyes reflect the misty, moonlit night.
Can you hear it? Perhaps it’s nostalgic. O, beloved person who sang together with me!

koko ni iru zo koko ni iru zo

I am here. I am here.

kuruizaki yagate karete chiri yuku tsuwamono-domo ga yume no ato
kei ni kakusareta kataribe no uta koyoi mo motomete samayotte

They bloom out of season, then eventually wither and fall. The soldiers are traces of a dream.
The storyteller’s song is hidden in scripture. Tonight I wander, searching for it.

hara hara to afururu namida sono uta o machiwabita
tomoshibi wa yowayowashiku mo yuugen no kagayaki o hanatsu
shito shito to ochiru kage yori hangon no ka ga kaoru
tsukiakari tsukumo no inori tayori nai sono te o tsukande

My tears fall silently. I’m tired of waiting for that song.
Though the light is weak, it emits a subtly graceful light.
A scent, calling back spirits, is fragrant. It comes from the shadows that gently rain down.
Moonlight. Tsukumo’s prayer. I grasp their indistinct hand.

sasou no onibi shogyou mujou no ne ni odore

The will-o’-wisp lures you. Dance to transient sounds!

midare yo waga gen ni unare arashi no gotoku jigoku no tsuka yori tsuru ga hashiri saru

Lapse into chaos and rage at my strings like a storm! The crane flees from a hellish barrow.
Malice is a fleeting blade gathering near my strings. The sal trees, gone mad in a spring night, laugh.

A melancholic song, for a change of pace (?!). Interestingly, the title is read as ‘Suika,’ but it doesn’t use the same kanji as Suika’s name. Also, my translation of the album title is purely guesswork. It isn’t written with any kanji at all, so I split it up into よひ (夜日, yohi, ‘Night and Day’) and むすび (結び, musubi, ‘Connecting’).

The overarching image of this song is that of a woman who pines for her dead lover. The images and metaphors can get a bit complex, but if you approach it with that mindset, you should be fine!

chigireta kumo no sukima ni

This evening’s moon, projected through
The gaps in the torn-up clouds,
Was a pale floral pattern. It bore a strong resemblance
To an unfastened kimono sash.

itoshi kimi no kuchibiru ga kuchizusamu temariuta
ano hi no omokage wa mou

The lips of you, my beloved, hummed a traditional handball song.
The traces of that day have already
Gone to the furthest ends of a night of calamity.

neyuki no shita de mebuita ishi no
tsubomi wa doko de saku no darou?
sashinobeta te no nukumori wa kawaru koto naku

I wonder where the flower bud of my purpose,
Which budded beneath the lingering snow, will bloom?
The warmth of your outstretched hand does not change…

nakushita mono wo wasuresaru you ni
sugi yuku shiki no utsuroi ni
michi no hashi yuragu hana yo
kimi wa ima nani omou

As if it forgets the things it has lost,
O, that flower sways on the side of the road,
In the passage of the four seasons.
What are you thinking of now?

tooku nijimu hanadairo ryuu to tabi yuku no uo wa
“ono ga sadame” to chiri te mo haze ni madoite

A light indigo spreads across the distance. Though the fish that travel in those currents
Scatter, following “their own destiny,” they are lost in the traps.

hakanaku moroku kudaketa tsuki no
kakera wa doko he kaeru darou?
amakakeru sono kirameki wa kataru koto naku

I wonder where the fragments of the broken moon, (1)
Which was transient and brittle, will return to?
That soaring, twinkling object tells no tales.

tomo ni asa made hanashita yume wo
kami no kobune ni ukabeyou
nagaku tsudzuku kono tabiji wo shizuka ni miokutte

Let us float that dream, which we spoke of until morning,
In a small boat made of paper.
We shall silently see it off on its long journey…

kimi arishi hi no ano irodori yo
itsuka mata otozureru you ni
potsuri, potsuri tsumugu otodama yokaze ni nosete

O, the days of you as you were are coloured in that way.
So I can speak to you again one day,
I place a spirit of sound, which I spin drop by drop, on the night breeze.

sari yuku mono he sasagu omoi no
sono hakanasa ni tomedo naku
manabuta kara otsuru tama wa naze sakazuki wo somu

There is no end to the transience
Of thoughts that are offered to the departed.
Those beads that drop from my eyelids somehow stain my cup…

I would probably classify this more as an ‘interpretation’ than a ‘translation,’ since I kind of had to improvise a little when faced with archaic Japanese grammar and Chinese characters… I used some online classical Japanese dictionaries, though, so I’m hoping that my logic holds firm! At its heart, I think this song is about Mystia, who is doomed to die a fiery death. The constant references to flames make me think that Mokou is involved too, somehow. There’s also a clever ‘theme title drop’ towards the middle and end – look out for it!

But yeah, if there’s anyone out there with more knowledge of classical Japanese than me, please feel free to correct me on the romaji/translation! I’d like to learn more about this stuff…

This song centres on Byakuren, who pines for her love in a deserted wasteland (which is either real or metaphorical). She wishes on the moon for a chance to be with him again…

As a bit of a side note, the sentences are quite disjointed at certain points, which creates a sense of ambiguity. I tried to ‘unjumble’ some of the sentences, just because it’s harder to make those sorts of sentences work in English. The first stanza is a particularly notable example of this, since the last part almost feels like it belongs before the first part… As for the title, I believe that ‘Windia’ is a sort of elaboration on the word ‘Wind.’

I am alone in this isolation. I search for the moon – for light. (1)
I wanted a fantasy – a dream I would not wake up from.
If this world is meaningless, and infinitely manipulated,
It would be good if it were to be destroyed. However…

dare no koe mo kikoenai seijaku no yami ni
natsukashii kioku kasundeku…

I cannot hear any other voices here, in the darkness of silence.
My nostalgic memories slowly become hazy…

The wind carries away a melody.
It dissolves, and makes a memory bloom:
It is of that smiling face. I see the shadow of you, from my recollections, once more.
I offer this memory to the moon.

Still, I want to be close to you. But no matter how much I wish it,
This nightmare – a dream – is my reality, which I do not awaken from.
In the moon reflected in the window, only my yearning grows stronger,
Aiming towards you, my dear, who I cannot meet.

usugumo wo surinukete terashi dasareru mi wo

My illuminated figure slips through the thin clouds.
Hey, guide me. I don’t want to be parted from you.

I cannot forget
The promise you made me.
Even if my yearning screams wither during those days,
I will continue to sing of this memory…

tsuyoku nigiriatta te hitomi sorasazu ni
dakiyosete kono eikyuu no yoru,

In this eternal night, I shall grasp your hands tightly.
Without looking away, we will embrace,
And share a kiss of whiteness. Aah… once more,
I make my wish upon the moon.

(1) The Japanese text is ‘the moon,’ but ‘light’ is sung, demonstrating a peculiarity of Japanese songs. I’ve left both words in for the sake of clarity. It happens a couple of times, though I haven’t marked each instance of it because my formatting makes it pretty obvious (I think… >_>)
