Update (21 May 2023): Updates to stanzas 1 and 3, prompted by a comment from Arter. Thank you!

When I was making the updates I mentioned above, I also realised that 降り続く音 (furitsuzuku oto) might actually be the Japanese form of the title, so I put it in. You could replace the line with ‘The sounds raining down erase those few words.’

Translation

It’s better if lying philosophies, or things like that, don’t exist in the world…
Aimlessly – left, right – I pretend to ask for too much.
“Come to my side, I don’t want to be parted from you.” I can accept no comfort
from this paper-thin reality, and I experience a stranger’s fate over and over.

Those innocent days. After the rain, nothing remains.
Nothing but a metaphor of a kind of ruins, caught in my chest.
There’s no mistaking it – even if you know, it’s meaningless.

The rainscall erases those few words.
I pretend to be a calm stranger, an act that gets weaker the more I do it.
Sometimes, the wounds I cannot feel cross over the framework I imagined up.
I replace love with sloth. I refuse. My back tightens up.

Within cause and effect, in which there is no time and no freedom,
Flowers bloom even in ruins with broken pillars,
so you mustn’t know. Not here.

I deceived you for the sake of love. I mustn’t atone for it…

Those innocent days. After the rain, nothing remains.
Nothing but a metaphor of a kind of ruins, caught in my chest.
I will not hesitate. I will not speak the truth.

Because someday, after the rain, your flower will bloom…

Hi, I have a question to ask about the meaning of the translated lyrics.
The way I initially understood them was that the main character/singer/girl (assuming) is talking about infidelity and that she regrets committing it, but wants to keep it a secret to protect her love.
But when reading them more carefully I notice these two lines:
“Without accepting comfort, I pile up the last days of a different stranger.”
“My act of being a calm stranger is as powerless as the amount of times I do it.”
Are actually both referring to the same person which is the singer herself. And with that the message changes to – the singer has a past which she has hidden in order to allow herself to fall in love. Her past keeps coming back for her, but she refuses to acknowledge it for the sake of her love and wants to weather the storm and not speak about it.
I was wondering if for the original japanese lyrics these two lines:
“Without accepting comfort, I pile up the last days of a different stranger.”
“My act of being a calm stranger is as powerless as the amount of times I do it.”
Are actually speaking about the same person – as in the singer from first person ? Or if it is ambiguous and you have just translated it ambiguously ?
P.S. I’m asking 8 years later, but if you answer you will make me feel special :d

Hello! Thanks for your comment! Even though I translated this song 8 years ago, it was good to revisit it. I revised my translation of stanzas 1 and 3 to clarify some things that I think I left too vague the first time. In both cases, the word used for stranger is 他人 (which also means ‘outsider’ or ‘a person not related’). In other words, the speaker may be either literally or metaphorically distant from the one they love.

Looking back over this, I wonder if the speaker’s beloved fell in love with someone else before she got a chance to confess, and now she must keep silent to protect her beloved’s happiness.

I think the suggestion of infidelity could work too – and it fits with the underlying theme of atonement (or lack of atonement).

I hope that helps! And please let me know if I can clarify anything further (^_^)

Wow it is a lot clearer, thank you for replying now and translating this 8 years ago as well. I love this song musically and originally interpreted it in my head based on sound alone – well the lyrics obviously turned out differently and I am now struggling to fit them in with my views. The interpretation of infidelity was something that I did not want to accept 😀

I think that your interpretation that her beloved fell in love with someone else is the one that fits the most lyrically. All the lines really fit and some become really impactful, especially this “I replace love with sloth. I refuse. My back tightens up”. Sloth, the sin people commit when they feel their actions will have no meaning, is such a good word to describe her mental state.

[…] I was quite surprised to see Releska’s translation of The Party of Seven Witches and Rainscall, though. Wouldn’t expect anyone to care about Taishi’s songs […]
