Update 10 November 2017: Reworded the translation, changing it from being about ‘you’ to being about ‘I’.

When you look at this song from a different point of view, it becomes a heartbreaking song about someone searching for someone who has died.

Translation

Perhaps, somewhere in the world,
You’re just something I can no longer contact.
I wonder if my days of searching for you
Will come to an end someday…

We part, then I grieve,
Then I catch you, then I do it all again.

The thing that I want grows more distant
Yet just reaching out my hand
Fulfils me.

But today, once more,
The sky can only be coloured
By dusk.

Really, I knew that freezing truth
The whole time.
I never surrendered
Because I’d have to let you go.

We part, then I grieve,
Then I catch you, then I do it all again.

Only time that has passed by
Can no longer
Be recovered.

But today, once more,
My heart can only be coloured
By dusk.

The thing that I want grows more distant
Yet just reaching out my hand
Fulfils me.

But today, once more,
The sky can only be coloured
By dusk.

Hello. Thank you for your translation.

    —-
    > The first stanza implies that the whole song is about ‘you,’
    > but there’s one section in there where the focus seems to change to ‘I’…

I think we can assume this whole song is about ‘I’.
In that assumption, I think the first sentence in the first stanza is separated from other three sentences and it means like “Perhaps you may have already died somewhere in the world.”

That makes sense, and that interpretation removes my doubts about この胸, as well. To begin with, I read the first stanza as a whole phrase (so 君 is searching for 手に入らないもの). But if you split it up, it’s possible that 君 /is/ the 手に入らないもの…

I think I’ll revise it with that in mind! Thanks once again (^_^)b
