The title only says オレンジ (orenji – orange), but I translated it as ‘orange sky’ to link it to the final line (そらのかなたまで – sora no kanata made).

I could talk for ages about the semantic difference between かなたへ (kanata e) and かなたまで (kanata made) – I see the first as being something like “we’re heading there but we might make one or two stops along the way” and the second being something like “it’s going to reach this specific spot in the distance”. I could be totally off the mark with that, but that’s the flavour it gives me.

It’s tough to translate into English, since we only really use “beyond the sky” when we’re talking about space. If we go with ‘into the distance’, then we lose the image of ‘sky’…

ほうかごのこうてい
げんきにはしっていく
えがおがきになるの

houkago no koutei
genki ni hashitte iku
egao ga ki ni naru no

In the schoolyard after school
we run around cheerfully.
Your smile catches my eye.

こまってるわたしに

やさしさがうれしいの

komatteru watashi ni
keshigomu kashite kureta
yasashisa ga ureshii no

I was worried
but you lent me your eraser.
Your kindness made me so happy.

オレンジのひかり
きょうしつにあふれてる
すべてがうまくいきそうよ

orenji no hikari
kyoushitsu ni afureteru
subete ga umaku ikisou yo

Orange light
is overflowing from the classroom.
It looks like everything will turn out okay.

とくべつなきもち

そらのかなたまで

tokubetsu na kimochi

Hoping to pass on
this special feeling,
My paper plane flies
to that point beyond the sky.
