ある事柄を述べるのに、
同義語
または
類語
または
同語を反復させる修辞技法のこと。

同義語反復、類語反復、同語反復等と訳される。
関連した概念に冗語があり、
しばしば同じ意味で使われることもある。
また、撞着語法はトートロジーの反対の技法である。

同語反復(どうごはんぷく)とは
「私は私であり、君は君である」のように、
等値を示す語によって同じ言葉を繰り返すことである。

文学、評論等、言語表現における
技巧のひとつとして用いられる。

「AはAである」
は、例えば
「AはあくまでAであって他のものとは異なる」
という注意喚起、あるいは
「Aは所詮Aであってそれ以上ではない」
という主張、等々の筆者(話者)の意図を含み得る

また同様に
「AはAであり、BはBである」
は、例えば
「AとBを混同すべきではない」
という注意喚起、あるいは
「AとBは(ある文脈で)異質である」
という主張、等々を含意し得る

言葉遊びとしては、
「非AとはAに非ざること也」
「ABとはAをBすること也」
といった、説明を避けて相手をけむにまく表現がある。
「父は男親である」
のような表現も、
言い換えによる広義トートロジーとされる。

重言(じゅうげん、じゅうごん)は、
「馬から落馬する」

のように、同じ意味の語を重ねる日本語の修辞技法。

意味を強調したり語調を整えるため、
あるいは理解を確実にさせるために用いられる。
二重表現、重複表現ともいう。

「頭痛が痛い」
などの修飾語と被修飾語の意味が
重複する形が重言となる

「巨大」
「重複」
「表現」
など類義の漢字を重ねた熟語は、
通常、重言とはいわない。

ただし、同じ漢字を重ねた
「堂々」
「悠々」
などの熟語を、
畳語の類義語として重言ということもある。

from the Greek word ταυτο, meaning ‘the same’)

When speaking of a certain thing,
using a synonym
or
quasi-synonym
or
a figure of speech in which the same word is repeated.

Translated to Japanese as 同義語反復 (dougigo-hanpuku), 類語反復 (ruigo-hanpuku), 同語反復 (dougo-hanpuku), etc.
Related words have a certain wordiness to them,
and are often used with the same meaning.
Also, ‘oxymoron’ is an opposite technique to tautology.

Tautologies, like the following phrase:
‘I am me, and you are you’
repeat the same thing by using equivalent words.

In fields such as literature and critique,
it is used as one type of expressive technique.

For example,
‘A is A.’
In this phrase, a point of attention is made:
‘A is purely A, and different to other things,’ or
‘A is ultimately A, and nothing more than that.’
With those sorts of statements, the writer/speaker’s intent can be implied.

And, in the same way
in phrases like the following:
‘A is A, and B is B.’
a point of attention is made:
‘A and B shouldn’t be mixed together,’ or
‘A and B (in some context) are different.’
With those sorts of statements, various things can be implied.

As a play on words, phrases like
‘NOT A is different to A’ and
‘AB is when A does B’
serve to avoid explanation and confuse the other party.
Expressions like the following:
‘Dad is my father,’
can be taken as tautologies in a broad sense by saying things in other words.

重言 (juugen, juugon, words with similar meaning)
is a Japanese figure of speech referring to where words with the same meaning overlap, like in:
‘I fell off the horse’ (literally, ‘I fell off the horse, from my horse’) or
‘The horse neighs’ (literally, ‘the horse lets out a horse’s neigh’).

It is used to emphasise the meaning or adjust the tone
or to make it clearer to comprehend.
It can also be called a two-layered expression or an overlapping expression.

‘My headache aches’
These sorts of cases, where the meanings of the modifier and the modified word overlap
are a tautology.

‘Gigantic’
‘Repetition’
‘Expression’
and such words that contain synonymous kanji
aren’t known as a tautology

However, those with the same kanji such as
‘Grand’
‘Quiet’
and others
can be called a tautology, as a quasi-synonym of syllable repetition.
