Another old BUTAOTOME album appears…! But yeah, unlike Pop, this album doesn’t revolve around cannibalism. Or at least, I don’t think it does. I found it a bit difficult to pin down exactly what this song is about, though. Is it a hallucination? Is it commentary on the state of the world? I’ll leave it up to you to form your own interpretations.

The title of this song is a shortened form of 禍々しい (magamagashii), which I translated in the context of the song as ‘ominous.’ It also has several other meanings, such as ‘misfortune.’ Also, upaya, which is referred to in the first stanza, means something like ‘the path/guidance to enlightenment in Buddhism.’

Translation

The sky is ominous. It looks like the moon’s broken up, too.
Good, bad, and upaya lie upon an ambiguous line.
Everyone cheats their neighbours, and
The world overflows with insecurity…

My consciousness, which I am bound to, breaks…

The cup is filled with too much information – it overflows like water.
Before you know it, the flavour of the water has disappeared…

The present flows, flows around. Somehow or another, now…
A thick tome of history is lying inside my desk.
Carrying it is tiresome!
I live in that sort of way.

I forget how to cover up those blank spaces…

I decide that things I don’t understand immediately are lies, and
I tell a tale made by someone else…

The cup is filled with too much information – it overflows like water.
Before you know it, the flavour of the water has disappeared.
I decide that things I don’t understand immediately are lies, and
I tell a tale made by someone else…
