Translation

A pitiful dream floats in the mirror, in which everything is inverted.

I am unconsciously lured in
By the world reflected upon the water’s surface, and I fall.
In the silence of this transient, moonlit night,
I draw an arc, alone, and I wait.

With my red eyes, I look up at the shining, upside-down palace…

Aah, the burning, demonic autumn leaves fall from the sky. The flames dance. (1)
The sky and the earth, light and dark… I will turn everything upside-down!
In a sky in which the flowing stars sway, the wicked child swims.
The fabrications rage in reverse, and the snow dances down.
My tears fall. The needle of right and wrong pierces the heavens. (2)

Upon the boundary between Heaven and Earth,
I stack up the moon and the sun and follow their double meanings.
I gaze up at the ground, and step upon the sky.
A pair of camellias floats upon the reverse river.

The blue moonbeams illuminate the water’s surface – the sky.

Aah, the arrows of purple lightning rise, spill, and fall.
Good and evil, strength and weakness… I will turn everything upside-down!
The bewitching mirror reflects the swallowed-up shadows.
My silent tears solemnly stream down my face, like rain from a cloudless sky.
The arrow that strikes the chrysanthemum returns, crossing over eternity…

Translator’s notes

(1) 紅鬼の葉 (aki no ha, red demon’s leaves’) is a homophone of 秋の葉 (aki no ha, autumn leaves). ‘Autumn leaves’ is probably the intended phrase, but ‘demonic’ was added to keep with the written phrase.

(2) 正邪の針 (seija no hari) can also be interpreted as ‘Seija’s needle,’ as it uses the same characters as Seija’s name.
