One meaning of Mahoroba (まほろば) is a splendid land of bliss and peace – the sort of thing you’d spend a lifetime searching for.
As usual, this took a very long time to translate. The lyrics truly take you on a journey…
―早朝 遠く離れた場所にて―
—Early morning, in a distant, separated place—
まほらがあるらしい
It seems as though Mahoroba exists.
凝視！ 巍々と鎮座！
Look! Towering enshrinement!
海女たち
「誇らしげであるー！」
The female divers:
“Be proud!”
海霧の底で へばりつくのだが 何も無い
They cling at the bottom of the sea fog, but there’s nothing there.
―では 夜まで待とう！―
…Very well, we shall wait until night!
風のひと
「ひゅるひゅる ひゅるひゅる」
The person of the wind:
“Whoosh, whoosh!”
おだやかな夜だ
ううーん！
It was a calm night.
Indeed!
ことごとく出てはいるのだが…
ううーん…
It’s altogether like they’ve come out, but…
Indeed!
凝視！ 注視！ 熟視！ 看視！
Stare! Gaze! Scrutinise! Watch!
小声の海女たち（怯えた様子である)
「おいそれとは見えぬぞ」
The whispering divers (who seemed frightened):
“Oi, I can’t see it!”
もの並べて遠くに見ゆる
It can usually be seen in the distance.
「ずんどこ ずんどこ どんどこ どんどこ」
“Zundoko, zundoko, dondoko, dondoko.” (1)
遠くで何より臆病な心音が聞こえる
In the distance, heartbeats more cowardly than anything else can be heard.
～一方その頃～
~Meanwhile, at that moment~
おだやかな夜だ！
What a calm night it is!
波のひと
「どどーん！ ずんどこずんどこ！ ずんどこどこどん！」
The person of the waves:
“Do-don! Zundoko zundoko! Zundoko doko don!”
嵐のひと
「びゅるる びゅるる！」
The person of the storm:
“Whoosh, whoosh!”
海女たち
「磯が伸びるー！」
The female divers:
“The shore is lengthening!”
男
「星の法典を作ってみたがどうか！？」
The man:
“How about crafting the laws of the stars?!”
海女たち
「干珠で伸びるー！！」
The female divers:
“It’s lengthening with the tide jewel!”
海神様（の様であるが)
「誇らしげであーるー！！」
The sea god (or so it seems)
“Be proud!”
海神様（いや 鬼の類であった！)
「引きずりこむー！」
The sea god (no, they were a type of demon!)
“I’ll drag you along!”
豁然とある宝全にて
深海を産み 昂然と反るのさ
At the spread-out Houzen shrine
The deep seas were brought into being and proudly returned.

海女たちは歌う
「ひゅるひゅるひゅるひゅる」
The female divers sing:
“Whoosh, whoosh!”
風のひとも歌う
「びゅーびゅー！ びゅるる！」
The person of the wind sings too:
“Whoosh! Wh-whoosh!”
悲愁の流人 波濤に爪立つ！
The grieving exile stands on tiptoe in the rough sea!
焼け焦げた雲が互いの顔色を伺い
彼を見下ろしている！
The scorched clouds guess each other’s moods.
They’re looking down on him!
風のひとも体をまっかにして歌う！
「びゅー！ びゅーう！ びゅーう！」
The person of the wind turns their body bright red and sings!
“Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!”
彼
「よいだろうよいだろう！
では 灼熱の虹でいけるか！？」
He says:
“Very well, very well!
Now, can you handle a red-hot rainbow?!”
海坂歪み 燃える
The sea slope distorts and burns.
手 伸びる 手
鬼 食らう 鬼
Hands. Hands stretched out.
Demons eating demons.
天心に！ 一閃が！ 海界に！
At the zenith! A glint! Upon the ocean boundary!
星が燃えている
The stars are burning.
海女たちは逆様になり 嗚咽している
海面より足を突き出し 懸命に月を蹴りあげている
The female divers turn upside-down and sob.
Their legs protrude from the sea and they fervently kick at the moon.
同様に 彼の足も海面より突き出ている
In the same way, his legs were protruding from the sea.
時折 ものすごい早さで開脚をしているが
そのうち ぴくりとも動かなくなった
Sometimes, they spread their legs awfully quickly
but before long, they didn’t even twitch.
海は穏やかだ
The sea is calm.
―後の夜へ戻る―
—Returning to a later night—
破船よりまろび落ちる
Falling from the shipwreck.
海女たち
「よよと！」
The female divers:
“Waaah!”
新月の
It’s a new moon.
海女たち
「思い詰めている」
The female divers:
“Brooding away…”
長夜に迷ひてふらり
Wandering aimlessly during a long night.
星頭の女性
「ああーん！ ああーん！」
The star-headed girl:
“Ah! Ah!”
余波にはらわた数多見て
I gaze upon all the guts left behind in the aftermath.
～或いはまたその一方で～
~Or, at the same time again~
頭垂れし男性は影在り
With a drooping head, he casts a shadow.
双子の解説者
「どうやら潮境にて 篝火をたいている様子」
The twin commentators:
“Looks like a fire is burning where the ocean currents meet.”
うーん…
Hm…
自身の顔を暖めている ようにも見えるのだが
ここからではよく見ることが出来ない
It seemed as though they were warming their own face
and yet I can’t see very well from here.
「波掛け衣かにもかくにも 燃やして」
“Anyway, burn the clothes steeped in the waves.”

何かを呟いているようなのだが
ここからでは聞き取ることが出来ない！
Hmm…

海が荒れ始めている
海女のひと曰く
またあんだら男がここを訪ねてきたらしい
The sea is starting to get rough.
According to the female divers
once they knit again, the man will come visiting again.
風のひと
「ひゅるるるる～」
The person of the wind:
“Whoooosh…!”
嵐のひと
「びゅるるるる！」
The person of the storm:
“Whoooosh!”
風のひと（嵐のひとの真似をして）
「びゅるるるる！」
The person of the wind (pretending to be the person of the storm)
“Whoooosh!”
波のひと
「ずんどこどこ！」
The person of the waves:
“Zundoko doko!”
海女のひと
「おはしまさふ！」
The female diver:
“Come here!”
わたなかに火の道現るるより早く
Faster than a path of flames appearing in the waves…
鬼のひと
「神づまり！」
The demon person:
“Gods are jammed in!”
激怒している！
海神（偽物だが）は激怒している！
全身が蒼い色の炎で包まれている！
They’re raging!
The sea god (though they are false) is raging!
Their whole body is clad in blue flames!
男
「海の法典を作ってみたがどうだ！」
The man:
“Why not try to make the laws of the sea!”
海女たち
「おとろしや壊劫なりおとろしや！」
The female divers:
“How terrifying. It is Ekou. How terrifying!” (2)
腸が凍る！ 腸が燃える！
Their guts freeze! Their guts burn!

ああ えがみ月 せりあげし怒濤 渺茫と
底なしの欲得以てひかめき
Ah, the moon rises on the riverbank. The surging waves swell boundlessly.
It shines like bottomless lust.

宝前の忘れ 風むかひ 波むかへ あんだらよ
Forget before Buddha. Head for the wind and waves once you’ve knitted it together.
腹這いになり 魚の真似事をする海女たち
「かしこみ かしこみ…」
The female divers lie on their bellies and pretend to be fish.
“Kashikomi, kashikomi…” (3)
世を背き 夜 空に巣がく
I turn my back to the world and spin night in the sky like a web.
怒 怒 怒 怒
Rage, rage, rage, rage
怒！
Rage!
恥辱のあまり正体を現した鬼たちが
彼を海の底へと引きずりこもうとした瞬間！
At this moment, the oni who revealed their shameful forms
sought to drag him beneath the sea!
仏様（のようなひと)が暗澹たる中天より
Buddha (or someone who seems like him) came from the dark zenith.
すす すすす―
With a whoosh…
と舞い降り 凍りついた眼をこちらにむけ
千本ほどもある
ご立派な御手を差し出しているではないかー！
they swept down. Their frozen eyes turned my way.
They had a thousand arms
and weren’t they offering their splendid hands to me…!
仰向けになり 大宇宙で踊る星々の真似事をする海女たち
「かしこみ かしこみ…」
I faced up, and there were the female divers mimicking the dancing stars in space.
“Kashikomi, kashikomi…”
海神様（どうやら「其のひと」と思われる）は
白目を剥いて口を大きくあけている
The sea god (who, at any rate, seemed like ‘that person’)
showed the whites of his eyes and had his mouth wide open.
無様な鬼たちも同様に
白目を剥いて口を大きくあけている
The unsightly oni, in the same way,
showed the whites of their eyes and had their mouths wide open.
臆病な海女たちも同様に
白目を剥いて口を大きくあけている
The cowardly female divers, in the same way,
showed the whites of their eyes and had their mouths wide open.

Stage blackout.
―干し魚のお面を被った男の切なるお伺い―
—An eager query from the man wearing a dried fish mask—
これより先に映し出された映像は早回ししてあり
また ふいに巻き戻され また中断されている
その上 何かはわからないが 映像全体を通して
赤い妙な滲みが非常に多く
まともに閲覧することは
困難なものとなっているのだ！
そこで ぜひ貴方が直接現地に赴き 体験し
そこで何が起こるのか
いやその時 何が起こっていたのか
あの男に何が起こったのか
是非私に伝えてほしい！
うーん！ ううーん！！
The footage shown from here is fast-forwarded.
It also suddenly rewinds and is paused.
What’s more, I do not know what it might be, but throughout the whole footage
a strange red ooze is unusually prevalent.
It’s quite difficult
to inspect it directly!
And then, you must certainly head directly there to experience it personally.
What will happen there?
No… back then, what was happening?
What happened to that man?
I want you to tell me!
Hm! Yes!

—Arrival—
気がつくと 男は蒼色の砂漠にいた
小さな砂の山が
ぽつりぽつりと 点在しているのだが
そのうちのひとつの蒼い山の中腹にて
斜に端座している
When he came to, he was in a blue desert.
Small sand dunes
were scattered in ones and twos
but he was sitting on an angle
halfway up one of those blue dunes.
まさか まさか まさか ここが！
Could it be, could it be? Here?
男
「やったぞ やったのだ！
とうとう私は辿り着いたのだー！」
The man:
“I did it! I did it!
At last, I have arrived!
おめでとう！
おめでとう名も無き青年よ！
貴殿はとうとう到達したのだ！
Congratulations!
Congratulations, nameless youth!
You have arrived at last!
男は興奮のあまり
白目を剥いて口を大きくひらき
一心不乱に蒼い大地を摩擦している
He was incredibly excited.
He opened his eyes and mouth wide.
He rubbed himself wholeheartedly against the blue land.
蒼いひと
「すやすや すやすや」
The blue person:
“Sound, sound asleep…”
赤いひと
「すやすや すやすや こくり こくり」
The red person:
“Sound, sound asleep… dozing away…”
投げ首の蒼い珊瑚礁たちが難渋している
投げ首の赤い珊瑚礁たちが呻吟している
The blue coral reefs, at a loss, are suffering.
The red coral reefs, at a loss, are moaning.
白いひと
「しんしん しんしん」
The white person:
“Silence. Silence.”
紅雪を廻らす影のの遠く
The distant shadows stir up the red snow.
男が時も忘れて魚の真似事をしていると
真赭色の着物を着た女性（のようなひと）が
近づいてくる
While the man loses track of time and mimics a fish
a (person appearing to be a) woman wearing red ochre clothes
comes closer.
舌の長い女性（のようなひと）

The (person appearing to be a) woman with a long tongue:

うまく聞き取れない
He couldn’t quite make it out.
男が端座しながら首をかしげていると
While the man was sitting upright, tilting his head,
女性（のようなひと）は
自身の顔の皮膚をべろり！と剥ぎ取り
鉄と鉄が擦れ合うような 奇怪千万な声でこう詠った
The (person appearing to be a) woman
stripped the skin off her face with a slurp!
and with a monstrous voice like iron scraping against iron, she sang:
顔の爛れたひと

The person with a festering face:

途端 女の顔が 凍りつき 爆ぜ
億万の氷柱となって 男の眼球に突き刺さる
At that moment, the woman’s face froze and split open.
It became millions of icicles and pierced into the man’s eyeballs.
生死長夜だ！
This is the darkness of life and death!
大宇宙の中心へところげ落ちる男
「あ～あ～ あ～ ああ ああ～ ああ～んああ～ん」
The man tumbles and falls toward the centre of the universe:
“Ahhh! Ahhh! Ahhh! Aaaaaah!”
男の顔は凍りつき 手からは炎が 足からは炎が
全身から炎が 業火が 焔が！
His face freezes, and flames come from his hands and feet.
Flames come from his whole body—hellfire, a blaze!
ひ ひ ひ が ～～～～～～
The fl-fl-flames…
そして口からは大量の火虫が吹き出している！
And a vast number of firebugs burst from his mouth!
役者たちは変わらず 白目を剥いて
口を大きくあけている
其の口からは大量の火虫が吹き出ている
The actors, like usual, open their eyes wide.
They open their mouths wide
and a vast number of firebugs burst from their mouths.
火虫は凍りつきながら 天へ昇り
大宇宙に燦然と輝く星々に繭を作り
億万の其れは大銀河を形成し
遍く生物待望の大海原として擬態し
またこの世界へと還ってくるのだ
The firebugs ascend to the heaves while freezing.
They shine brightly in the universe, making cocoons in the stars.
In their millions, they form the Milky Way.
They mimic the ocean, long-awaited by all creatures great and small.
They will return to this world once more.
ざんねんなことだ
もう還れない
かなしいことだ
もう戻れない
How unfortunate.
He cannot return home now.
How sad.
He cannot return.
四劫の輪廻へようこそ青年よ！
Welcome, young man, to the cycle of kalpa!
はっはっは まほらなどなかった！
なんとも 愉快痛快な結末ではないか 青年よ
はっはっは 青年よ はっはっは
そうだそうだ そこの君たちも笑ってごらん
Ha ha ha! Mahoroba did not exist all along!
Is this not a delightful outcome, young man?
Ha ha ha! Oh, young man. Ha ha ha!
That’s right, please try and laugh along, all of you over there!
私
「はっはっは！」
Me:
“Ha ha ha!”
そこの君たち
「わっはっは！」
All of you over there:
“Wa ha ha!”
私たち
「あっはっは！」
Us:
“Ah ha ha!”
―篝火を焚き 祭祀するひと曰く―
—According to the person performing a ritual, lighting the bonfire—
「ああ まほらなどなかったのだ」
“Ah, Mahoroba did not exist all along.”
―砂漠へ戻る―
—Returning to the desert—
そうだ まほらなど なかったのだ
That’s right. Mahoroba did not exist all along.
全てに等しく 無は語りかけ 有と誘い
また無に還る
Nothingness speaks equally to all. It invites existence
then returns to nothingness once again.
それだけのことだ
That’s all it is.
ざんねんなことだ
How unfortunate.
浮夜の海往く
月掛かりの 過ぐ世とも 思ひ
涙の底惑いながら 躓き蹲りながら
欠け細る残月の波を舐めずり 漣に消ゆ
Passing along the sea of the floating night,
and thinking together with the passing world that spans the moon.
While wandering in the depths of tears, stumbling and cowering,
he licks the waves of the waning morning moon and vanishes into the ripples.
