There’s some clever aquatic imagery used in this song. For example, the title ベタ (beta) means ‘clichéd’ on the surface, but is also used for the fish ‘betta’. You also have a reference to a goldfish (金魚) and the word for hippocampus, 海馬 (kaiba) also means seahorse.

Translation

I don’t expect much from I love yous.
Before I drown in love
I’ll drain my glass of wine.

Alright, how much longer will you run away?
It’s a good night, so why not get drunk.
I’m compensating just a bit
for my loneliness.

The goldfish all decked out in lingerie
is overwhelmingly lacking in platelets.
This world’s full of things beyond help.
If you ask me, I wanna die from a haemorrhage.

There’s not enough, not enough. A toast to us!
Why not share a cup?
Holy mother, this room is lonely
but you can count on me.
How much longer will you run away?
Not enough, not enough.
You want to be filled to the brim, right?
One more cup!
And then say those clichéd words to me.
It’s a secret. Pinky promise!
It’s utterly private.
I’m so lonely it’s embarrassing.
I don’t expect much from I love yous.
Before I drown in love
I’ll drain my glass of wine.

Mesona and aldehyde.
Clinging breaths and azalea pink.
The ether numbs my throat
and then I listen to the farewell poem.
“Thank you for choosing me.”

Y’know, I want to melt inside you.
I want to hug inside your womb and melt with 7.5 degrees of contact.
How painful.

A toast to this world, which is dead boring!
Well? Can you do it?
Holy mother, don’t cheat me.
I’m so lonely.
Count on me.
I’ll escape you.
I’ve failed an eternity’s worth of deaths
and now I’m full. One more.
When I die, say those clichéd words to me.

I’ll keep it secret for you. It’s private.
I won’t tell anyone that I noticed the blue
mixed into the glass.
I’ll inhale but won’t fall. Ah…
Make sure you keep me until I die.
Darling, I love you.
I live in your hippocampus.
I don’t expect much from I love yous
because I’ve drowned in love!

Thank you so much for the translation! I found Reisai through Paradise Lost Dive and that song along with this one is…a lot to chew on. I don’t expect you have an answer to this since both songs seem to be a part of a series, and thus, my questions are likely only answerable by the author/future songs themselves. I wanted to give a shot, just in case I can gleam extra insight?
Do you have ANY idea what this stanza (below) means in context?

Y’know, I want to melt inside you.
I want to hug inside your womb and melt with 7.5 degrees of contact.
    How painful.

Reading some of the author’s tweets, I am assuming the “womb” aspect is metaphorical due to the writer’s Tweet (here: https://twitter.com/dodonomefish/status/1476398298198323202?cxt=HHwWhMDR8cGbnP0oAAAA ; note, according to Google Translate, I was desperate to learn more and unfortunately dont have any Japanese skills orz), but Im…itching to clarify the “7.5 degrees of contact” part. Ive thought it over from a temperature angle, “angle” angle, and a proximity angle to no avail, so Ive thrown in the towel and making this attempt to reach out to someone who will 1000% have a better crack at this this than me.

The “Holy Mother” aspect of the song is intriguing to me too, as Im uncertain if the character in the song (Sanae, but I digress) is somehow referring to himself as some sort of complex, theres an actual entity at play that Im uncertain of (since…Gods exist in this series’ universe, but also, other Tweets suggest the woman flashed briefly in the song’s MV could be a sibling of the younger guy, Alma), and/or Sanae is just particularly religious since my brief reading on the term “seibo” has led me to the translation of “Virgin Mary,” too–which may have further implications on the concept of wombs and birth…? Religion is also unfortunately not a strong suit of mine.

Once again, I am completely understanding and honestly expecting there to be no clear answers about this. And I imagine there may be other projects, so I apologize for any disruption on my end. orz

I would be grateful if there was anything more that can be said about my points of interest! But also, if there straight up isnt anything to say and/or no interest, time, and/or energy that can be devoted to answering, I understand and accept that too! I would just be…appreciative if I could be straight up told that, if thats the case, haha. For my mind’s sake! If youve/anyone has read all this, thank you for humoring me at all. Ive just been super into this character since Ive stumbled upon him!!! Have a wonderful day! c:

As a bonus, fun note that may be of interest of you yourself, the writer has actually commented about this translation, I believe! (here: https://twitter.com/dodonomefish/status/1556989119984996353?cxt=HHwWgsDU_d7WxJsrAAAA) I just wanted to put this here, as I would find it very neat, haha. Thank you, once more!

As promised, a proper response. Thanks again! It was interesting to read that tweet, I tend to feel a bit self-conscious about creators reading my translations of their work, but they seem really nice. It seems like the intention behind the line ‘当てにしちゃいないさ愛尓’ is for it to mean ‘I don’t believe you when you say “I love you”’.

I agree that the ‘womb’ part is metaphorical, since the tweet says ‘This is a story about the boy Alma spending nine months [十月十日 – the normal gestation time for a pregnancy] gestating in Sanae’s room (the womb) and being reborn.’ They also say they’re thinking of writing more about this song in liner notes in the future, so I’d be interested to read them if they’re out there somewhere!

As for the part about ‘degrees of contact’, I was really unsure how to approach that when I first translated this song. I can try and clarify some of the words used in the sentence though. 接点 (setten, which I translated as ‘contact’) could refer to the point where a tangent line reaches a curved surface. It can also refer to contact points in electrical currents or points of agreement. Maybe the whole sentence is another metaphor? I assume that if a tangent line meets a curve at a 7.5 degree angle it must be pretty close, so it could just be another way of saying ‘I want to get so close to you we melt together’.

I had a deeper think about it think the Holy Mother part might add to some of the metaphors from elsewhere in the song. Like, looking at the bit above about contact – it’s something the speaker wants but doesn’t have. Likewise, the Holy Mother/Virgin Mary becomes pregnant without physical contact. So what if the Holy Mother is Sanae, who is gestating Alma on his journey to be reborn? He wants contact but can’t have contact.

Separately, there’s some evidence that this song is told from multiple perspectives since there’s 私 (watashi), あたし (atashi); two versions of anata: 貴方 and あなた; and a stray きみ (kimi) at the end.

I hope that clears things up a little? It’s definitely an interesting world the writer has created.

Ah, youre welcome!!! Goodness, thank YOU for taking the time for a thorough reply, I honestly didnt expect it since I recognize this is a random character from a translation a considerable amount of time ago, dlafnbjkn- It means a lot!!!

I definitely get you feeling self-conscious! I got the gist the Tweet was nothing but praise and elaboration, and you certainly work very hard! Thus, since its good to get positively acknowledged, I figured itd be a good send, haha. And wow, thank you for translating the Tweet for me, Google Translate completely fumbled that one, kajldfadkljn- Man, Sanae…hes a fascinating character, haha.

How intriguing! While the “womb” aspect remains metaphorical to me, I imagine that “nine months” part is just genuinely insight on the timeframe of the song. While I dont have a hand on liner notes nor do I think I can get my hands on them currently, Ive actually perused the writer’s Twitter for lore about characters/the world in general. The @dodonomefish handle appears to be devoted solely for creation thoughts, while @sanagarafish (as far as Ive looked through) is a general, everyday thought account, haha. Irrelevantly, I may make a compilation of Reisaisakana’s “Lore via Tweets” in the future, since my endeavors about Sanae have led me to become surprisingly invested. MORE relevantly, due to my endeavors, I have actually collected some Betta-relevant Tweets of potential interest, haha. Please, do enjoy at your leisure! And as much as Id enjoy a translation, please, dont feel obligated either, I recognize this is a lot and wouldnt want to pressure you. In chronological order for ease of access!

To sate any further interest, there is apparently an “official site,” to get a brief on lore, characters, and a relationship chart for Sanae’s shop (Touyoutei?). Please, have tons of fun, glad to have my own information-gathering benefit(?) another! Not only has it helped me, its helped another~!

Ooh, I see, I see! Thank you. I definitely agree its a proximity thing. Hinted in the song and other things, Sanae seems to struggle with loneliness, so that conclusion in its somewhat desperation to connect makes sense. I focused on the line in case there was some hidden meaning to the number 7.5, so Im glad its been clarified that there doesnt seem to be in itself, haha. Your conclusion about the Holy Mother/Virgin Mary is so amazinggg, the fact that it CEMENTS the other metaphors so smart!!! Sanae himself is a god who returns life to those who have died, according to Paradise Lost Dive, so there could be a connection of “creating life out of nothing/when considered impossible.” Connecting to Sanae’s loneliness, he and the Holy Mother are both special in their positions (as divine beings), but as a result, normal connections with other people become impossible because of how people treat/perceive them. In terms of how the lyrics are phrased, theres tons to think about how Sanae thinks, views, interacts with himself, so Ill have fun chewing on that, haha. Ultimately, Betta seems to be about how Sanae takes in Alma and takes care of him until Alma is “reborn” as a new person, demonstrated by Alma attempting to kill Sanae (since Alma seems to have…inadvertent daddy issues? That he mightve been projected onto Sanae? Info below!).

        https://twitter.com/dodonomefish/status/1495441286933127168

The perspective thing makes me extra intrigued. Another Tweet actually asked how Sanae refers to himself, so my first thought is that the song is demonstrating that (here: https://twitter.com/dodonomefish/status/1480456776999145473) However, from what I understand, the Tweet answers that Sanae uses “watashi,” “boku,” and “ore,” depending on who hes talking. Which is noteworthy, because “atashi,” “anata,” and “kimi,” are not involved in that (unless Im missing out thats its implied Sanae uses them too?). An interesting note about this is that towards the end of the MV, there is a singular time where theres a speech bubble used, undoubtedly showing that Sanae is the one saying that line. Ill have to look back on that line sometime and ponder that too, ah… If its not Sanae referring to himself, I can roll with the idea that its Sanae’s customers and probably Alma portraying their viewpoint of Sanae too. Tons of food for thought for me!

Again, thank you! At first, I was only really invested in Sanae because my understanding of the world, it has gods, demons, AND vampires, so I felt like the world was gonna be messy, admittedly. But theres a lot to think about and the characters (from what little I understand) are pretty compelling and fun to think about, haha. It makes me so excited for future works, haha. Thank you again, truly. And ah, thank you for taking this bombardment of text, haha? Your interest, time, and effort is very appreciated! And thank you for doing translations in general! I hope you have a fun time with all the lore, and have a wonderful day!
