The word 妖禍子 is used throughout the song. It’s pronounced the same as 妖 (ayakashi), which is the first component of the word 妖怪 (youkai). I’ve kept it as an untranslated term, but the component parts literally mean something like ‘mystical, catastrophic children’ – or the more creative ‘problem children’.
The first part of the title is interesting, too, since it could contain as many as three elements – あやかし (ayakashi, discussed earlier), まやかし (mayakashi, fake or deception) and あまやかし (amayakashi, spoiled or indulged). There are a lot of valid options out there, but I like the idea of ‘(Make) Believe Melancholy’, which takes in the ayakashi and mayakashi elements.

Translation
The hundreds and thousands of ayakashi
lingering over the crowd
vanished in a moment of silence
like letting go of someone’s hand.
Go on, say it’s a lie
and say you hate it.
I wear the days that come
and fill in the blanks on the pages.
Ah, the pranks of the shapeshifting cat
and the world of the dream-eating baku
must be mysterious, silent tricks of this world.1
I watch on, charmed, with lonely eyes.
If I could hear your voice,
if I could hear your voice,
then the heartrending sight piercing through me
might be a little easier to bear, too.
I load even the tiny memories
that are getting hazier
on your smile, which won’t come back
and I fill in the blanks on the pages.
Ah, we make things unseeable, unbewitchable
and we strongly object—
we’re the true ayakashi,
they’re there in our hearts.
If my voice reaches you,
if my voice reaches you
then whether it’s love or a dear song
perhaps you’ll sing it in tears.
I made a promise until we meet again.
I wonder if I’ve gotten stronger?
Before I knew it, I was climbing
that long stone staircase.
If I am in sight
if I am in sight
then please, give me a little courage.
“It’s okay, it’s a promise, right?”
The morning I could hear your voice
the morning I could hear your voice
ah, I reached out my right hand
faster than my regrets spilled over.
“Won’t you be friends with me?”
- The word 摩訶不語思戯 is used here and is pronounced the same as 摩訶不思議 (makafushigi, deeply myserious). The characters 語 and 戯 are added: 戯 was accounted for by adding ‘trick’ at the end, and ‘silent’ was added to accommodate the new compound 不語. 不語思戯 resembles 不謌思戯, which appears in the album title. ↩︎
