Black Parrot

mayonaka ni saku Black Parrot
dareka no tame ja naku anata no tame
yukkuri to me wo tojite
shizuka ni nemuru gensou no hate

The black parrot blooms in the dead of night
For your sake, not for someone else’s.
I gently close my eyes,
And I silently sleep, at the end of illusions.

moeagaru honou seijaku no yari
rasen wo egaita midori no yaiba
shikkoku wo matou yami no tabibito
kokoro wo madowasu ayashii hikari

The flames flare up. A silent spear.
The green blade drew a helix.
The traveler of darkness is clad in pitch-black.
A mysterious light puzzles my heart.

An unknown, mysterious form.
A kind voice reverberated through the night sky.

I won’t cry anymore!
An honest heart, and one that grows stronger.

I scatter seeds through the sky
For my sake, not for someone else’s.
The jewels shine in all the colours of the rainbow
And stain the night sky, at the end of illusions.

kaeru beki dokoka wo zutto sagashi tsudzukete ita
tada kuroku areru namima e karada goto nomarete yuku

I continued to search for the place I must return to.
Still, my body began to be swallowed up in the black, stormy seas.

kako kara no koe ga musuu no te wo nobashi samayou
torawareta umi ni tokedasu zetsubou ni somerare

That voice from the past stretches out countless hands and wanders about.
It begins to melt into the ocean that holds it captive, and it is dyed with despair.

arashi no naka wo yuku hitorikiri de
hageshiku fukitsukeru ame wo chirashite
uneru nami wo koeru chikara wo ima

The sky I could see through the gaps in the clouds disappeared like an illusion.
The wind scattered, blowing fiercely against me.
I walked in the storm, alone.
The rain scattered, beating furiously against me.
Now, I have the strength to cross the undulating waves…

mogaku tabi ni fukaku fukaku shizunde iki sae dekinai
karamitsuku subete wo furiharau tsuyosa de tachiagare mou ichido

Each time I struggle, I sink deeper and deeper. I cannot even breathe.
With the power to shake off the things coiled around me, I rise up once more.

kumoma no saki ni mieta sora wo tsukamu tame ni te wo nobashita

So I could seize the sky visible beyond the gaps in the clouds, I stretched out my hands.

mabushiku yami wo tatsu raimei saite
unabara wo susunde hitorikiri de
mabushiku yakitsuita kioku wo daite
umarekawaru tame no chikara wo ima

The thunder peals, radiantly cutting through the darkness.
I continue on through the deep, alone.
I embrace my memories, which have been radiantly scorched into me.
Now, I have the strength to be born again…

kanashiku nurete yuku hitomi no okusoko ni aru negai wa
uzumaku yami no naka tashikana hikari wo hanachi tsudzukeru

The wishes hidden in the depths of my sorrowful, teary eyes
Continued to let off light in the surging darkness.

kono mune ni idaita rashinban ga shimesu mama mayowazu
sadameta yuki saki ni tadoritsuku sono hi made tatakai tsudzukeyou

Whilst I have the compass I hold close to my chest, I will not go astray.
I will continue to fight until the day I finally arrive at my fated destination.

More Diao ye Zong! This time, the focus is on Kogasa, as she searches for her master/owner/husband(…?!). I added in the lyrics page for this one because this circle’s lyrics booklets are always excellent. This one basically sums up the entire story in one image, so it’s kind of a spoiler…

As for the title, the word 怨み節 (‘uramibushi’) apparently refers to a particular type of song, characterised by resentful lyrics and a sorrowful tune. I translated it as ‘Lament’ here because, though it has a slightly different nuance, I felt that it fit the character of the song. Also, since Kogasa’s name is spelt the same way as ‘kogasa’ (umbrella), the title can be interpreted as ‘The Lament of Kogasa, Who was Abandoned.’ Yet again, we see a pun on a character’s name.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Was it in the distant past, or a yesterday I had not experienced?
Though I did not know of my birth,
The lamp resting inside my chest
Pursues my former master.

A single lamp illuminates the way ahead.
Though I journey far, far away,
My heart is teased by these thoughts, which grow violent.
I cannot become accustomed to such pain!

My memories grow dim; as they are, I yearn for them.
Aah, if I could feel the warmth of those hands once more…
I head to where I was before – where I was embraced by you,
Overcoming hardships.

The paper lanterns
Sway in a double-ring pattern.
At the destination of the sounds of my geta, (1)
No matter where, you will be there…

Aah, my master! You are the one I love.
Now, I have traveled more than 1000 ri… (2)
This road is burned by the flames in my chest as I walk upon it.
It is a pathway of love, leading to my master…

Umbrella patterns, as far as the eye can see.
In this dripping wet, noisy gathering of husbands and wives,
Are your shoulders soaked as you stand alone?
Do you wait for the rain to lift?

Why are umbrellas held by their masters?
It is because, though they expose themselves to the rain, they are happy.
I shall certainly return to those hands,
And surely, I shall offer myself up.

I sweep away the sand,
And I conceal my eye.
At the destination of the sounds of my geta,
No matter when, you will be there…

Aah, my master! You are the one I love.
The one who is waving their hand… is it you?
This road is burned by the flames in my chest as I search.
It is a pathway of love, leading to my master…

That nostalgic silhouette
Is hazy in the rain.
I see the figure of a woman,
A stranger in those hands. (3)

Aah, my master! You are the one I resent.
The will-o’-wisps flare up and burn inside my chest.
The umbrella, who does not know her destination, is alone.
This is the lament of an abandoned umbrella.

(1) ‘Geta’ are a particular type of Japanese wooden sandals.
(2)
‘Ri’ is a unit of measurement dealing with length. It equates to roughly half a kilometre in modern-day measurements.
(3)
小傘 (‘kogasa’ – Umbrella) is written, but 女 (‘onna’ – Woman) is spoken.

There are some pretty obvious references to Yuyuko’s backstory throughout this track. To begin with, I thought that the butterfly was a metaphor for death, rather than a direct representation of Yuyuko. I guess it could kind of go both ways, depending on how you look at it…

(1) This is an odd phrase – it sort of has connotations that the thing in question is hidden, but is in plain sight at the same time. After all, the back (裏 ‘ura’) of the back, or the rear of the reverse side, is the front.
