Translation

Kagome, kagome. Confined baby bird,
you are a princess, beautiful with your red spider lily looks.
You pity the child you look after and ask about them,
“When, oh when will they leave?”
“I will never let them go.”

Spin and come together. Lick the swelling and sup on the pus.
Exorcise all sicknesses and misfortune!
Khukuri, visiting from far away, don’t come near the nightly feast.
They defy the command.
“Who is tasked with keeping watch?”

The villager’s shade, and another, toyed and joined with the Empress doll.
What is she trying to do with her feeble voice, smothered by shame?

I will grant
your expired dreams.
Head down the river to the ocean.
Descend the mountain and wash away the disgrace in the night of dawn, far away.
Descend the mountain and escape together in the night of dawn, far away.

Don’t pass, don’t pass through. The caged chick is escaping!
Swaying to and fro’, the flames of the mountain hunt press on.
This curse comes from far away. It will return to have its revenge.
I lament that my family will die and my village will end.

Kill the child and feed them to the dogs! Bring the princess back!
“There they are!” “Found them!” “Don’t let them cross the bridge!” “You won’t escape!”

Let go of my hand. Please, head safely to the ocean.
Slip through my grasp. Please, head safely to the ocean.
Sink, still your breath. Fall with the burning bridge.
Don’t go, don’t go. Fall with the burning bridge.

Don’t cherish me, for you’ll regret it when it’s too late.
I offer you to fate and, leading calamity along, wash it all away to the ocean.

If things end with my life, and if I could protect a single feeling,
then do not begrudge anyone. Do not grieve for anything, my beloved. Please.
Do not begrudge anyone. Do not grieve for anything, chick in the stream. Please.

I pray and yearn for you far away. Let us meet again at the ocean.
