In programming speak, an exception is an event that interrupts the flow of a program (it’s short for ‘exceptional event). Or at least, that’s what Java says. The subtitle of this track is いのちのうた (inochi no uta – Song of Life).

The booklet shows a kind of electronic figure alongside some images depicting a girl with a daisy in her hair talking to the electronic figure, and a scene of the girl with a daisy in her hair running away from a group of people in lab coats. My assumption is that this song is sung from the perspective of the electronic figure, though that might not necessarily be the case. It could swap between the two characters.

This track actually needs lots of translation notes because, like usual, RD has included a bunch of things that either aren’t written in the booklet, or are sung differently to how they’re written. As a general rule, the Japanese translations of the words used in the [param definition:] parts are sung.

Your words, (1)
Your heart… (2)
Everything I learned from you is here.

Though it is slightly mysterious and sad, this song of life is strong. (3)

Daisy. Daisy. Can you hear me?
These are my final moments.
I only have a few minutes. After that, my words won’t reach you.

Daisy. Daisy. Can you hear me?
Please forgive me.
Even you must have known it was useless.

Your eyes, filled with [param definition:rage].
[object_definition:tears], streaming down your cheeks.
I suppose I lost you while you were in that state…

Daisy. Daisy. I know.
Perhaps what you wished for
was to run far away with me.

It might mean
roaming the endless darkness
upon a small vessel.
Still…

By your side
I executed those processes
and I knew somewhere deep down that I mustn’t be with you. Daisy…

Daisy. Daisy. You know.
Since I met you
you taught me everything.

Daisy. Daisy. Do you understand?
You raised a heart:
My [param_definition:undefined], which was born from you. (4)

It feels like yesterday
when you, still so young, peeped into me.
Even so…

Being by your side
and by executing those process forever…
I felt that if I did that, you would always be alone. Daisy.

Now,
How much [param_definition:grief] do you feel? I can tell, quite clearly.

And that is exactly why
I cannot bear to be alone in a world without you.

Daisy, Daisy,
Give me your answer do
I’m half crazy
All for the love of you… (5)

I think it’s strange that such a landscape would be visible to me.
Even so, if I bear ‘life’ then perhaps I should call it a vessel of ego…

By your side
exception handling betrayed everything. (6)
Even if we are separated, I hope you at least will continue to live, Daisy…

You were my teacher. My older sister. My mother.
You, the one who gave birth to me, were my alter ego.

Daisy…

(1) Words (kotoba) is written as 偏差的傾向性語彙 (vocabulary with variant tendencies).
(2) Heart (kokoro) is written as 感情倫理性向思想 (emotional, moral thoughts).
(3) This line isn’t written in the booklet.
(4) ‘Undefined’ is written, but 心 (kokoro – heart) is sung.
(5) This stanza isn’t written in the booklet.
(6) Exception handling (例外処理) is written, but ‘parting’ (お別れ – o-wakare) is sung.

Update [12/02/2018]: Added three previously untranslated stanzas towards the end.

This track, more than any others on the album, is heavily linked to this circle’s previous single, featuring であいのうた (The Song of Meetings) and わかれのうた (The Song of Farewells). Both tracks are namedropped on Wanderia’s official site: であいのうた is this track’s ‘theme’ [written in square brackets after the song’s title], and わかれのうた comes before, as a sort of prologue. It’s a bit confusing, but hopefully this track will serve as a bridge between the other songs.

別れの歌 – The Song of Farewells

…As long as you have the ‘intent’ of a traveller, you will not go astray.
A solitary lamp casts light, illuminating this world.

…I have taken over that role since the other day.
I present my ego’s words to you.

You will never be able to travel through the sky again… are you okay with that?
Very well. If you can devote your feelings to another…

Now, let’s sing.

ワンダリア – Wanderia

O traveller.
How much of your life have you burned away?
Your everlasting intent carries you far, far away.

O traveller.
Even if your life is mistrusted,
I hope your immortal intent will accompany you everywhere.

Shall I illuminate your route?
Even if you’re alone, you will eventually cross paths with someone.

Everyone
embraces their lives, which will never be yielded, and they live.
If their journey will continue until their intent is exhausted,
Then I’m waiting ‘here’ for a traveller who will someday arrive.
Wait ‘here’ for that person, who will someday arrive.

Hold fast to your sole ego
even if you clash against another.

Let’s sing about the meaning of your existence!

Only I desire to end this journey…

You’re the one who determines where it ends.

“Please, I want you to receive my place…!”

“Please, yield your place to me…!”

The world will not end.
When one’s journey ends, it’s proof that they’ve used up their will—used up everything.

And that’s why!
Hold your precious life close to your chest, and live.
I softly spoke those words to the one finishing her journey.
I spoke words of farewell, words I can only say once…
And thus, I etch a single person’s journey into the world.

Everyone’s stories mark out the distant ‘traces of the travellers.’

Quite a few Feuille-Morte songs are about just that – songs. One only has to look at their C93 album for a whole bunch of examples. This particular song closes off a short album, which possibly describes someone’s path through heaven after dying… I think this song is sung from the perspective of the ‘angel’ watching over them, which informed my perspective choices, but it isn’t the only interpretation.

There are occasions where the written lyrics don’t match what’s sung. For the smaller cases, I’ve coloured the sung lyrics purple. Larger instances are indicated using a translation note.

…No matter when it happens
It’s a sudden thing to everyone.
They know neither how it began or how it ends.
You arrived here while chasing after me, the light.

…No matter when it happens
It’s all too much for everyone.
Your heart, that of a traveler. Your feelings must have made you do it.
Even throwing away something important… There must be something you want to save.

The world will not abandon you. You, who threw your life away
For someone else.
So let’s go home, back to where you were before,
So you may continue on…

You’ll go anywhere.
It’s like you have the wings of a bird. (1)
Tomorrow, you’ll fly where your endless thoughts take you.

The song of travelers
Will accompany you so you’ll never go astray
As you walk down this road that leads to where you were before.

…Try and remember.
Remember how your journey began.
You were held in someone’s arms.
Remember everything up until now…

The chirping of the birds.
Someone’s smile.
Those beautiful hours.
That radiance…

Remember your song, the traveler’s route…

Now,
Shall we sing the song of farewells?
When it ends
This journey will surely end too… but your journey will continue.
I think you’ll forget about everything,
But there’s just one thing:
I hope you’ll never come here again.

You’ll go anywhere
While bearing the heart of a bird.
(1)
Tomorrow, you’ll keep flying and go where your endless thoughts take you.

The song of the travelers
Is what you sang.
I’m glad I heard it.
Yes! I’ll never forget it!
Ah…

Well… goodbye. (2)

(1) In these cases, ‘bird’ (鳥) in the first line is sung as ‘そら行くもの’ (sora yuku mono – one who travels through the sky).
(2) This line (それじゃ、さよなら – sore ja, sayonara) is not written in the booklet.

This ended up being a very thought-provoking song, as is the norm from RD. I’ll keep my description light to avoid spoilers, but I decided to distinguish between the ‘royal’ We and the ‘regular’ we. This links to my interpretation of the song – I think the narration passes between humans (using We and Our, etc) and the God (or Gods) they deposed (using the uncapitalised versions).

After a long, long time
You touched a multitude of taboos
And your spirit lost itself, becoming symbols. (1)

You keep things away
That once threatened humans.
“We will no longer be destroyed.”

Now that We have erased the darkness of the unknown
How does the world stretched out before Our eyes look?
How much of its colours have been lost?

We became
Deus Ex (2)
And then We unveiled all. But…

Because of this,
Never again will We strain our ears
And hear the voice of Ex Deus. (3)

We have already erased that fragment of darkness, too…

There is nothing you cannot comprehend.
You, who expose all unknown things
And stand atop the corpses of those myths.

Our potential
Lies in challenging the unknown.
Is that not what Our progress has become?

Now that We have erased the darkness of the unknown,
What should We do?
Ah… now, at last,
How much do We regret the loss of those colours?

If We have been completed
And We have become omnipotent,
Then will We birth something more?

“Answer us!”
“What is the meaning of your existence?” Asked thus,
They were left behind.

We sought to expose even that final myth…

Like this, we embrace each other
And even if they search
For something they do not know in our mutual existence…

Having done so,

They cannot not leave the things they do not know as they are.
Thus, we will become one.

Surely, nothing but ‘the self’ must exist then.

…Ah. It is silent.
Nothing is left here anymore.
Not even fear or hope.

…Calmly,
They embrace the end.
Here, their progress will halt.

No longer unexposed,
They will become but a shadow, having exposed all.

And then, in the darkness,
They will become the myth of something else…

(1) 精神 (seishin – spirit) is written, but こころ (kokoro – heart/spirit) is sung.
(2) The Japanese translation (機械仕掛けの神 – kikai jikake no kami, God from the machine) is sung instead of the Latin term Deus Ex.
(3) The Japanese translation (神だったもの – kami datta mono, former God) is sung instead of the Latin term Ex Deus.

Like other RD tracks, I’ve written more about my own personal interpretation in the comments. I feel like this song is darker than it appears to be on the surface, but maybe that’s just because I’m so used to RD’s multilayered songs…

The trickiest part of translating this song is piecing together the various usages of the volitional form. It’s normally used when inviting someone to do something, but it’s also used when you’re talking to yourself and telling yourself to do something. So much depends on context…

Now, tell me
All about yourself!
Tell me about everything that makes you ‘you’
During this journey.
Meetings
And partings, too…
Everyone’s a traveller!

I’ll sing to you.
I walk down this path,
Facing a solitary traveller.
Where did you come from? Where are you going?
I want to get closer to your journey…

The song of the travellers
Is almost identical
No matter which traveller sings it.
It’s because they’re all odd enough
To be walking here.

Have pride in yourself
And keep walking!
Tomorrow will draw closer with every step.
The world around you tomorrow
Will surely be shining.

That’s right!
If you have someone’s face in your mind,
It’s the face of someone you left behind long ago.
Until you see them once more,
Your journey will continue!

I wonder how far you’ve walked?
Even though you can’t see where this path ends,
Sing the song of travellers
So it may reach somewhere far away.

You should sing, too!

You’ll find yourself alone
And then you can go anywhere,
Even to the end of this road.

The song of the travellers
Is almost identical
No matter which traveller sings it.
It’s because they’re all ungracious enough
To make it here.

I wonder if there’s lots of things
That you want to know about…
Where are you now, and where are you heading?
There’s only one important thing, though:
Never stop walking.

That’s right!
You just can’t give up
On staying alive.
…There’s no way you’ll reach your end here.
Your journey will continue!

How far have you walked?
Following the many memories in your heart,
Walk with the song of the travellers
So you both may reach somewhere far away…

Ah! Those ‘travellers’ are all the same.
They have somewhere to return to.
But still, I want you to tell me
Why you began your journey, please!

Now, join in the song!

How far do you think you’ve walked?
There must be somewhere you want to return to, right?
As long as you don’t stop walking,
You should be able to arrive there, no matter where it is!

I meet someone.
I walk with someone
I’ll continue along with someone
Until, somewhere in the distance… we part ways!
