アクアテラリウム || Aquaterrarium

Vocals: Meramipop (めらみぽっぷ)
Lyrics: azuki
Arranged by: kaztora
Album: On That Day, I Looked Up at the Sky (その日私は空を見上げた)
Circle: Shinra-Bansho (森羅万象)
Event: Reitaisai 12 (RTS12)
Original Theme: Locked Girl ~ The Girl’s Secret Room (ラクトガール ~ 少女密室 )

The final track from this album! As can be expected from azuki, this one has some wonderful images, painting a poignant picture of Patchouli, alone. An ‘aquaterrarium’ is literally defined as a “A box or aquarium adapted for water and a sloping bank of earth and rocks in which to culture snails and other amphibious animals” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary) – but it’s used here as a sort of metaphor, as can be seen towards the end of the song.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Happiness – though everyone has their own tastes, it’s something everyone possesses.
I was skim reading through a catalogue, in which people were smiling happily.

I bought a rectangular fish tank, so I could submerge my loneliness.
It’s as if the books are swimming. They sway, sway, sway…

It’s okay if I get laughed at, called insignificant and foolish.
I won’t be bothered in my miniature, precious secret base…
I wonder what sort of child lives here?
I think nostalgically about my aquaterrarium.

I felt as if I could remain pure in this miniature garden, in which all becomes transparent,
But look! There’s someone swimming, all alone. Like me, they smile slightly.

Inside this unpolluted fish tank,
Are guppies so beautiful they don’t fit in.

Though I held it with both hands, happiness spilled out,
So I sighed as it left me and escaped…
Even my nostalgic heart’s silverfish
Swim merrily inside my aquaterrarium.

Certainly, this place is like a big fish tank,
And I am alone inside this sealed-off world.
I’d decided that someday I’d try and leave this place,
But I still haven’t left. Why? Why? Why?
It’s because it doesn’t suit me.

How long will I pretend to be strong, living here?
A distance so close and yet so far away, like a misbuttoned button…
The truth is, I miss the hustle and bustle. This loneliness that comes from being alone… I’ve been deceiving myself!

Though I try to act tough, to pretend that I’m fine with being alone,
You, reflected in the mirror, aren’t smiling.
The fish lightly swim in the printed text. It’s a single aquaterrarium within the world…

If nobody’s looking, it’s okay to cry, right?

My searchlight illuminates life.
Life was left behind by my tail lamp – it’s a momentary flash, twinkling in the starlit sky. Lalala

You met me as I was dancing all alone on the banks of an abandoned river.
I looked at you, with your lonely eyes, always…

“That’s a detour!” “I can’t put a stop to it!” It was a once-in-a-lifetime encounter… or something.
“I said it out loud!” “I can’t take anymore!” Our laughing voices echoed…

Though it’s goodbye for today, let’s meet up again tomorrow, and the day after, too!
It’s not a promise, just a small request.
Still, I just want to sparkle together with you, you know…

I wait in vain. I want to meet you soon – I can’t stand the cold, cold winter!
If I spin ‘round and ‘round like this and wind up disappearing somewhere, what should I do?

“You can’t fool me!” “I can’t smile anymore…” Our parting is near.
“It’s a lie – there’s no way it exists!” Our laughter dances in the air.

Even the searchlight that falls upon the water is a kaleidoscope to you and I.
Rather than tomorrow, let’s start today!
I just want to be close to you for a little while. Lalala

Because someday, we can meet again. We make our pinky promise.
Since, like always, we don’t have to say things like “bye-bye!”

Though it’s goodbye for today, I wonder if we’ll be able to meet once winter ends…
Through the tears I shed, I’ll be able to smile when the cherry blossoms bloom, so until then, I’m all alone.
When the seasons turn, and we laugh together,
I’ll say ‘bye-bye-bye’ to things such as sadness!
When I’m with you, I can shine inside my heart.
Because I can be the light of life.
Because I can be your light…

Circle: Shinra-Bansho (森羅万象)

Original Theme: Retrospective Kyoto (レトロスペクティブ京都)

This is the second Seiji track from the album (the first being てのひら || Palm), and… it’s completely different to the first one. He was definitely thrown in the deep end for his debut with the circle… Arrangement-wise, kaztora’s approached this theme in a similar way to Ultra-violet, and as always, Mie delivers powerful vocals – it makes me wish she was featured more on this album…

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Until I can grasp the landscape burned beneath my closed eyelids –
The start has come, now.

I had overlooked it, within these landscapes that passed by each other.
Yes – I can’t preserve this imperfect happiness in a frame.
Now, I start my battle so it will take shape, and so I can preserve it.
Without looking back, I challenge them, and I fall.
I break down inside the darkness. If I continue to hesitate, nothing will change!
I’ll stand up! Now, I’ll cross over it, towards the future.

I soar high, flapping my wings.
Beyond an endless speed – I’ll show you I can overtake it,
So I fly to the place I aimed at! I meet it, with a crack.
The end of this story – that’s something only God knows…

The hopes of I, who am polluted by this lie-filled world…
They cannot be blown away with the press of a button – an all system error.
I pick up the weapon I dropped, and I hold it to my chest. It’s just killing me!
Even words become my strength.

You follow me, I follow you. After that one trial,
My shaking heart changes my mind. Now, I fire towards the stage!

What can you see? I threw that question out. It raced through the wind.
Though everyone is different, they hide it in their chests.
If I load my cries into my soul and fire it,
Then the curtain shall fall, in a theatre full of clapping.

(Count down! Four, three, two, one, zero.
Come on! Come on! Together, we shall forget the time.)
I repeat my sadness, grief, and pain. I guess I’ve come this far now…
(And the thing that attracts me to the last,
Is the thought of catching a shutter chance in my hands.
It’s not difficult – The scene is burned
Into my memory, not just onto film.)
And the tale of what comes after this… I’ll write it myself and advance!
(My heartbeat can’t be stopped by anyone.
But many times, I go to apply my finger,
And fly away. I will never turn back again!)

New-born pride is mustered in my heart! I’ll set off at once.

I shall cut it all off – all of the warmth that remains in this lost world.
What do you mean? The answer is already inside my chest.
It’s a blessing to this amazing world!

Take a shot – I flap my wings and set off.
Beyond even the future, as well as speed – I’ll show you I can overtake them,
So I release a cry from the abyss of my soul!
All around are the sounds of the audience clapping. They do not stop.
There is only one ending to this story. Unbelievable! Only God and the player know it…

kaztora takes another stab at writing lyrics. Like his first time writing lyrics for Shinra-Bansho, they’re cool, but at the same time I have no idea what’s going on. It seems to be a sequel (prequel, perhaps?) to a track from Doppel (Shanghai Butterfly Restaurant), with cats involved once again. A large portion of the first stanza is also written differently in the lyrics booklet – normally, I’d do the whole strikethrough effect, striking out what’s written and replacing it with what’s sung. But since it’s almost an entire stanza, I added it in as a note…

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

I looked up at the orange-coloured sky, and I was furious at the lies of that day.
Because, generally, the present state of the world is a dream, I won’t show you it!
I won’t show you it… (1)

The optimistic shirker has a lustful dream…
The world’s somewhat in a daze, and everyone moves forward irresponsibly. (2)

Now, people with something to cling to are the happy ones.
O, lost cat! Guide me…

The world was sent flying – three rotations.
The *twang* *twang* of the shamisen continues.
When you’re lured in by its merry sounds,
Your feet will dance, too! One, two, three! (Meow!)
Look, I won’t let you regret it.
Have more self-confidence – boost your ego!
Come, advance. Aim for my fingertips and go – struggle onwards!

Well, well. Welcome! How many customers are there today?
The full course – the pride of this restaurant – is ripe for the eating.

Now, the trick to living joyfully, which is the current obsession on the street,
Lies in saving those who in no way busy themselves doing things.

Hey, the sky still looks like it’s gonna start crying. It’s spinning, spinning!
It followed the sounds of this shamisen, and it continues!

You give up doubting – four rotations.
Come! Get drunk and forget about it!
Puff out your chest as if you’ve just been born.
Tonight’s alright – one, two, three! (Meow!)
I definitely won’t let you say you regret it.
Make some noise, make merry, and wallow in it! Banzai, banzai!
Now jump in! Follow my fingertip – come, with all your might!

Even if you awaken half-heartedly, stiffness only remains in your heart, right?
O, humans without pity, who cannot think of dreams as dreams! That which you rely on without grasping are dreams.

Now, turn ‘round and ‘round! A thousand rotations!
See? Truth and lies are just safe. (3)
How about tonight’s menu?
May I take your order? Three, two, one! (Meow!)
I won’t let you regret it anymore.
So, sleep in anticipation. It’s over…
If you awaken from this sweet, sweet dream, then it’s good-bye.
I guess there’s no talk of just deliciousness in this world.
Please, be aware of this. Ah…

(1) The following line is written in the lyrics booklet instead of lines 2 and 3 of this stanza:
The law of the essentials disappeared gently, like a lie. It disappeared with the dew.
(2) 大体 (daitai – ‘generally’) is written in the lyrics booklet instead of 若干 (jakkan – ‘somewhat’)
(3) よよいのよい (yoyoi no yoi) is a term used in baseball as part of a pattern: “Out!” “Safe!” … “Just safe! (よよいのよい)” By itself, the term has no real meaning.

Apart from that one time Kaztora decided to write lyrics, this marks the first time someone other than Azuki has written lyrics for a Shinra-Bansho song. The ‘newcomer’ is Seiji (青時), who according to his Twitter profile writes short stories and lyrics in his spare time, and reads about 20 light novels a month.

On his website, he wrote a little entry on being involved with this album: “I was in charge of a ballad and a rock song – completely opposite genres. This time, I think I gained a considerable amount of EXP…”

As anyone following my translations probably knows already, I’m totally Team Azuki all the way. Still, it’s nice to see another lyricist involved in Shinra-Bansho. This song is told from Meiling’s point of view – note the transition from third person to first person. Is it all a dream? Who knows…

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

In the past, that lonely girl sat with her arms around her knees.
She recklessly grasped only the warmth in her palms…

She saw off those days, dyed scarlet,
And she dreamed of the place she could return to…

When she spread her hands out, the treasure inside vanished with the dew.

She could only see them off, and they were parted. The stars flowed.
She felt someone calling to her, and was moved to tears by the hand that was stretched out to her.

Being relied upon, and believing. To begin with, it’s a bit awkward.
But I’ll show you that I can do the jobs you entrust me with, with all my might.

That aged gate, the watering can that stinks of metal,
And grass that has grown thin are all that are in this garden.

I hope I can stick out my chest and say “this is my treasure!”

To think that I’m so happy now… I try smiling at my past self, who had been left behind.
Even if my tears suddenly spill out, it’s okay – there’s someone who’ll wipe them away for me.

I whistle badly, putting on a modest concert.
In my album, turned sepia-coloured after being stained with tea,
These memories garnish its ever-increasing pages – I shall leave them behind…

The moon we looked at, side by side – though it was ordinary, it sparkled,
And it smiled at the stars that passed by. My face wrinkled and became wet.
I have so many things I treasure, I cannot hold them all – this is the place I will return to!
The thing that I couldn’t grab hold of that time is surely inside my palm…

Being relied upon, and believing in someone. I won’t hesitate anymore!
I’ll try my hardest in things other than the jobs left to me as well…

I must say, this is my favourite track from the album. I’d probably rank it as one of my most favourite Shinra-Bansho tracks, too. I say it all the time, but I love Azuki’s lyrics – it’s like he encapsulates the entire human experience in the form of lyrics, filled with references to mythology, science, and the theories of happiness.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Rather than passing the time living and suffering,
I believed that it’s better to die quickly and be at peace.

I realised that I was doing the same things every day.
Did I realise through intention or amusement? Look!
People spend their days unaware that they’re continuing towards death.
Who knows? I was the same…

To my dear friend – it’s so dark around me,
And the ground I stand on is made up of only pebbles.
I thought the halo around my head was pretty – at that time,
A demon suddenly sent the stones at my feet flying!

I, who am dead, know nothing of life,
As I am a corpse who cannot pray to even God.
I learn to believe, then forget what I have learned.
Today, too, I shall hang my head in the ring of the angels.

Is that which remains in my thoughts happiness or sorrow?
Time spent worrying is just a waste of time.
I wonder if those unexpected memories I recall are just trite static. Thinking that, I threw them away.

To my dear friend – what’s it like inside the ground?
Does the heat of the sun reach you?
The dead-eyed cityfolk who herd together –
I wonder if they’re any different to you?

Like the cicadas that rot away in the streets during midsummer,
We pass our time in the eternal ‘now.’
I suppose life that drains away is the same as death.
My 21-gram soul flies away – far, far away… (1)

Of my own free will, I worried, and of my own free will, I started walking.
So, I’ll at least live honestly, and die a fool.
I’m me! Even as this body crumbles and disappears. Ah

Continuing on towards death is a sign of living.
My heart aches – it’s proof of my existence.
I wonder how much I yearned for this...
I won’t let anyone stop me!
Goodbye afterlife! My field of vision opened.
Rather than passing the time believing I’ll be at peace after I die,
I wanted to rejoice in my limited life…

A little epilogue. Though the scars of the past may be slow to heal, it is possible to move forward, and build a brighter future…

And so… Shinra-Bansho’s third musical has been fully translated! All three of them are dear to me, but I must say, I think the plot in this one is a step above the others, with it emotional moments and sense of scale. (If only we had some dialogue to flesh out the more important things, like how Sanae and Nitori met up again, and stuff like that…) Either way, it makes me look forward to their 4th one even more!

By the way, I attached a low-quality version of the supplementary image, just so I could justify the sentence I chatter with the pink elephant…

Key: Nitori, Sanae

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Since then I’ve faced forward, [Since then I’ve faced forward,]
And I guess I could make it here. [And I must have come to life.]
Hey, if I don’t diligently keep my promises –
[That child… if I’m not here, she’s hopeless!]

Though I can never [Still,]
Return to that time again, [together,]
This new landscape [we search for our meaning for being alive.]
Has calmed down nowadays.
Aah, is this happiness a dream? [Ah, such happiness…]

Let’s make the flowers bloom, and garnish that grave!
I chatter with the pink elephant…
[A cracked heart of glass is easily broken.]
On the opposite shore of the horizon’s horizon,
[Until you can truly be made to laugh,]
The cosmos stretches out! [I guess I can’t get back on my feet, can I?]
Let’s take back the greenery of this great land! Let’s drive away those whispered slanders!
So we can live facing only forwards… That’s my job!

And then, I looked up at the sky. Now–

And so, our narrator closes the book, and looks up at the sky, feeling nostalgia she had not felt in a long time. Where is Nitori now? And what is she doing?

This actually raises an important question – who is the narrator? According to a supplementary image provided with the CD, Akyuu is meant to feature somewhere, so I assumed that she was the narrator. Even though Mie voices Marisa as well, her ‘narration’ voice is different to her ‘Marisa’ voice, which lends further weight to this theory. The co-narrator is (probably) Sanae, since Chippo voices Sanae.

(Also, like the first part, this part is called ‘The One Who Writes the Beginning’ [始まりを綴る者 – ‘hajimari wo tsudzuru mono’] in the booklet.)

Key: Akyuu, Co-Narrator, Both

And like that, the world was covered in darkness. Whilst all were bewildered,
That girl only believed in tomorrow. She sowed the seeds of flowers.

If the Second Sun that engulfed the world
Had not been born…
Even if she had not created it, mankind would have someday
Ended up struggling towards this future.

It was not chance. It was not inevitable.
Rather, it was only that girl, who just believed in the world…

I wonder, where is she now, and what she is doing?
Still, one thing is for certain: flowers are blooming throughout the world!

The land, as it bursts into leaf, is endless, and distant…
The babbling riverside has become clear.
The world spread out before us, as it was in the days of yore,
In a form that everyone would know.
What are you looking at now? [Smiles suit her so well.]
You are tormented by your sins. [This world is a little unkind…]
“The world and this fantasy are okay.” [Is your heart already okay?]
Because I want you, too, to know this… [I want you to tell me, as well.]
Because I want only you to know this,
I will keep telling this tale, forever…

In the depths of despair, a friend appears to offer Nitori encouragement. But is this happiness short-lived…?

I must say, this is probably the most moving movement out of all 3 of Shinra-Bansho’s musicals. The bit at the end, where Nitori takes over Marisa’s theme, is so symbolic, and so unexpectedly moving as well. As a side note, the title relates to the Japanese version of the idiom ‘there’s no crying over spilt milk.’ I chose a more… literal translation simply because it felt more appropriate, given the tone of this section.

Key: Nitori, Marisa

Hey, I wonder if I made a mistake somewhere. It wasn’t meant to be this way.
Didn’t she say that everyone would smile and be free…?

Even though you believed in me, in my foolishness…
Hey, Marisa. Can I do anything for you, my sworn friend…?

[Don’t cry! Because even though you can’t redo your mistakes…]
[There’s a way forward!]
Because I’m the way I am, I don’t want to give up,
[In place of I, who can no longer even look to the future,]
So let’s pass the time together from now on, too!
[I want you to let flowers bloom throughout the world again.]
“When that happens, we’ll laugh together, right, Marisa?”
“…I’m begging you – open your eyes!”

No matter how much, how much I regret it, I mustn’t look back.
A mushroom cloud rose over my path ahead. I looked up at the sky…
Still, now, at this place, I want you to permit me to make up for my sins!

Everything around is ashen, and the sky is dull. Where did that fantasy go…?

Dark grey snow falls. Night has vanished from the world. (It’s a silent heaven…)
It wasn’t me! This wasn’t meant to happen… It wasn’t me! It’s strange…
(Who made this thing!? Will our days of peace return to us?) [Burn!]

I can’t look at this feeling of bareness favourably. (All begins to be drained away.)
The lost boundary was certainly over there… (They begin to encroach.)

Was this power… (That forbidden apple) wrong?
(We mustn’t get involved.) Was this invention… right?
Can we still (Can you all still)
Say such things? (Say such things?)
The outside and this fantasy ended up being tied together.
Screams remain in my ears. Jeers attack my heart. [Ha- ha- ha-]
I mustn’t look away. This is certainly my punishment…
(You will receive your punishment here, forever!)
I wonder if I would feel better if I could become a machine, up to my heart…
I hoped to escape from those eyes. Still, I looked up at the sky.
(Screams remain in her ears. Jeers attack her heart. It’s apocalypse day. Still, time has been broken.)
[Screams. Jeers. That day. Ha-]
Aah, my friends, my sworn friends… Please, please! Show yourselves…
