Translation

The clouds flow by quicker than usual
Above this unchanging landscape.
I followed a gentle curve,
A hill road continuing with my memories.

I harbour my longing, a feeling that burns my heart.
I want to chase after you.

Ah… a paper plane flies
Across the blue sky.
Quietly, I watch it and experience a memory of past days.
I can’t put it into words.
I see off those wings,
Which once carried the two of us.

Crossing over a sunny spot,
The clouds let rain loose.
Memories created from kindness
Dampen my eyes, like tears.

The pair carve signs
So they will not forget themselves
As they are now.

Voices resound in the treelight
And the sky becomes blue.
I’m secretly thinking of words said that day.
O rainbow, blooming in all seven colours,
Please look upon the pair
In this future, this dream that cannot be fully given up on.

I harbour my longing, a feeling that burns my heart.
I want to chase after you.

Ah… a paper plane flies
Across the blue sky.
Quietly, I watch it and experience a memory of past days.
I can’t put it into words.
I see off those wings,
Which once carried the two of us.

Hello. Thank you for your translation.

    > Ah… a paper plane flies
    > Across the blue sky.
    > I secretly go through my memories of those days.
    > I can’t put them into words.
    > Those wings, passing out of sight,
    > Carry the pair into the distance.

There seems three points you interprets differently from me.

You seem interpret it as “repeat something” and the sentence in Japanese like 「あの日の記憶を重ねた」.
I interpret it as “put one upon another” in a metaphoric way and the sentence like 「あの日の記憶を飛ばした紙ヒコーキに重ねた」.
I would translate the sentence to
“I have flown a paper plane
for the blue sky, far afield.
I quietly see resemblance between it and my memories of those days.”.

I was surprised that I couldn’t find this usage in dictionaries.
I found some people talking about a similar usage.

… – Yahoo!

I don’t think when we do 「見送る」 the object is passing.
I consulted a dictionary and find “see off”, “watch after”, etc.

I interpret it as “past”, as I think “I” see resemblance between the paper plane and “I”‘s memories.
I would translate the sentence to
“Those wings I am watching after
carry the two (of us) of long ago.”.

Thank you for your comment! I always have trouble interpreting 重ねる, but I feel like I understand it much better now. I ended up changing my version to a looser interpretation that I think still embodies the meaning you suggested.

I also appreciated your comments regarding the paper plane imagery – I didn’t make the connection between ‘wings’ and the ‘paper plane,’ but looking at it now makes the whole stanza make much more sense! 😀
