Like most Teniwoha songs, this includes a lot of wordplay, some of which is untranslatable. 幽霊部員 (yuurei buin) in the title refers to club members at Japanese high schools who don’t participate in the club’s activities.

The text below comes from the beginning of the video.

衝撃の事実に気付いてしまった…
いきなりなんなの
晴海のことだからどうせもいいことでしょ
いや、これはマジで衝撃的だよ
あのさ、『どんぶらこ』って言葉、響きエロくね?
は?

“I’ve realised the shocking truth…”
“Hm? What’s with that all of a sudden?”
“Oh, it’s Harumi so it doesn’t matter.”
“No, seriously, it’s really devastating!”
“You know, the phrase ‘coming down the stream’ sounds so erotic, doesn’t it?” (1)
“What?”

Translation

I kicked the bucket just now.
“1, 2, 3, 4, 2, 2, 3, 4!”
Ghostly gymnastics puts my regrets in fine form.
“3, 2, 3, 4, 4, 2, 3, 4!”
Pretending to sleep, pretending to die…
“1, 2, 3, 4!”
The class is noisy.
“2, 2, 3, 4!”
Someone’s hung as punishment from indictment,
I’ll look from here.
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 8!”

We’re life’s ghost members at any rate.
Hierarchy, yodelay hee, yuureihi.
Lads, fight! On! Fight! On! Fight! On!

Were you born from being loved and loved and loved?
Loved and romanced and scorned, everyone other than me is close friends.
Ghost, olay, ghostly ghosts.
Lads! “Stand up” and bow. “Sit down!”
Goodbye teacher, goodbye everyone.

It seems I’m at a disadvantage in life.
“1, 2, 3, 4, 2, 2, 3, 4!”
The one in charge of the living is gloomy Usasa. (2)
“3, 2, 3, 4, 4, 2, 3, 4!”
“Don’t look away!” “Respond!”
“Don’t be idle!” “Don’t nod off!”
What, you want to withdraw from life? We’ll have a post-mortem session.

I put Dogra Magra in the school library. (3)
Yodelay hee with the hierarchy, that’s the school lunch fee.
Lads, fight! On! Fight! On! Fight! On!

Will we tie ourselves together then spread out?
We burn, shoot and destroy things, then we’re satisfied with graffiti.
Ghost, olay, ghostly ghosts.
Lads! “Stand up” and souls, “break up!”
The second button is the self-destruct button.

Okay, everyone take your seats. I’ll mark the roll.
Aizawa. Ishiguro. Kitamura. Kikuchi.
Kikuchi. Kikuchi. Kikuchi. Kikuchi.
Gee, there’s a lot of Kikuchis!

Were you born from being loved and loved and loved?
Loved and romanced and scorned, everyone other than me is close friends.
Ghost, olay, ghostly ghosts.
Lads! “Stand up” and bow. “Sit down!”
Goodbye teacher, goodbye everyone.

Translator’s notes

(1) The phrase どんぶらこ (donburako) was historically used in the tale of Momotaro. It describes the movement of the peach as it floats down the river.

(2) ウササ (Usasa), paired with クママ (Kumama) is a Japanese mascot character.

(3) Dogra Magra is a work of avant-garde gothic literature by Yumeno Kyuusaku.

Dear Releska, will you do the translation for this song? I’ll be glad if you take it. :^)

One small correction: judging from the web adress in the video description, the protagonist’s name is not Ishikuro but Ishiguro.

The song is connected to the novel, 石黒くんに春は来ない. Based on the novel’s website, Kitamura is one of the characters, but I didn’t see the other names mentioned. If you watch the video, Ishikuro is the only student absent in the roll call. My guess is that Ishikuro is the speaker of the song and faceless male student in the video. He seems to be marked out by his classmates and generally alone/friendless, given the video and lyrics. There’s also a lot of phone imagery and messages/text and LINE also seems to play an important role in the novel (as indicated by the usernames). So maybe gossip and cyberbullying is involved? There are also depictions of death associated with his character. I think that figuratively (and maybe literally) Ishikuro is the “ghost member” of his class.

This is one of my favorite Teniwoha songs and the PV is really pretty! I really like the imagery of the flower students. Thank you for the translation!

By the way, are the ヒエラルヒーでヨロレイヒー lines part of the untranslatable wordplay? You did something different with them for each line, so I was curious.

That’s right – the two sound a lot similar in Japanese than in English. I was a little more creative with it the second time it came around since the third word in the sequence (給食費) is a more commonly used word.

Without knowing what ユーレイヒー (yuureihi) means, I played it safe with the first one and left it as a simple list of the three.
