Rinki Sorami, who requested this song, wrote up an interpretation of it in Japanese over on his blog, which I referenced while translating this song. He suggests, among other things, that this song could be from either Flandre’s perspective or Flandre and Marisa’s perspective. My translation is based on the second interpretatiuon.

Magical Storm is one of my favourite themes from Double Dealing Character, along with ‘Thunderclouds of Magical Power’ – sadly, there aren’t many good arrangements of either theme. This one’s an exception, though! Out of the handful of Magical Storm arrangements, this is probably my favourite at the moment. I think it maintains the original character of Magical Storm, whilst adding enough new elements to keep it interesting.

I initially translated the title as ‘Needleward,’ but I had a few misgivings, so I decided to contact Wani, the lyricist, directly on Twitter! I got a reply (excerpt): “針(ニードル)の言葉であってます！ 針 = 針妙丸 という意味で書いたような気もします” Basically, he said that the title literally means ‘Needle Word,’ and the ‘Needle’ in this case is meant to symbolise Shinmyoumaru, or something to that effect. The meaning of the song itself is an entirely different matter, and one that I fear is less easy to answer. I kind of think that it’s based around Shinmyoumaru, who’s feeling unrequited(?) love for somebody. Though her ‘magic mallet’ allows her to search for answers, and remove/change the scars of the past inside her dreams/delusions, she uses ‘needles’ (real/figurative) to open up her scars and feel reality. That’s just one way of looking at it, though!
