Theseus’ Box
Vocals: あやぽんず* (Ayaponzu*)
Lyrics: azuki
Arranged by: kaztora
Album: ネタミニティ (Netaminity) [Official site]
Circle: 森羅万象 (Shinra-Bansho)
Event: C94
Original theme: Necrofantasia [ネクロファンタジア]
I think the title is based on ‘The Ship of Theseus.’ This thought experiment asks you to consider whether an object is still the same even if everything has been replaced. For example, is Yukari still Merry even after everything that was once Merry has been replaced…?
These lyrics are by azuki, so anything’s possible really. Let your imagination fly away! Also, listen out for the parts where Japanese sentences are juxtaposed with English sentences that sound the same. It’s very clever.
As my interpretation evolves, I may change the perspective of some sections. azuki’s lyrics are always multi-layered and thought-provoking.
非公式の英訳/Unofficial translation
I didn’t say “see you!” when you said “see ya!”
and I went to and fro wondering if I said it. It’s all about the words.
I swept my bubble-like feelings up and let them fall
so they didn’t even reach the roof. They fell silent and vanished. Oh…
We made a promise that day, and truth fell from our lips.
Useless, good-for-nothing… We clearly gave up on it.
That’s all we linked together. That’s all we connected.
We were all tied up, linking our pinkies together.
Somewhere over the rainbow, even I fade away.
I greet the sun. How many times has it been?
I just don’t know. So why can’t I cry?
I’m right here.
Ah, welcome to empireo, where things will meet their end. (1)
Wished for… longed for… everything vanished.
Joy will flow forth at any time, all the while fear eludes us.
You’re the only one who can’t exist in such a world.
No matter who I speak to, my feelings face the other way.
I want to say something, but my feelings are empty.
Strike that voice, and it will resound. It’s just like a bell.
No matter who, no matter when,
Listen to that voice. It crosses over. “Comprehend. Know.”
Though I abandoned my bonds somewhere over the rainbow,
In this vague world
I search for love, even now. I want sad God city.
I’m travelling.
This is the first and last exodus.
Wished for… longed for… they spill and fall.
Sadness makes my heart seem transparent, though the light disappears.
I head to a world where you, only you, exist.
“Why, why?” I sigh, “That’s why. That’s why.” I make my excuses.
All along I pretended not to see, all alone.
My delusions grow stronger and cheers well up from the silence.
I threw my emotions away long ago. The illusion makes my mind unstable, eating away at me.
And you…
I open and close my heart and it comes undone.
My feelings vanished into the sky and flew away.
I cast away my former self. I cast away my false self.
I was in love with a movie star.
Ah… you’re just so beautiful when you smile.
I was scared of you being broken by another. (2)
I imprisoned the world you lived in within film
so only I won’t forget that I loved you
and the words I loved.
Translator’s notes
(1) エンピレオ (Empireo) refers to the highest heaven, or the seat of God.
(2) 手折られる (teorareru) literally means ‘break,’ but it also refers to someone taking a young woman as their possession. It has deep floral imagery.
