Update (2 September 2023): Correction to last stanza (もしもし). Thanks keserarhythm!
Update (24 October 2023): Correction to translations of 通りゃんせ. Thanks Ranranruu!

This track is so deep. Like always (?) the parts in brackets should be interpreted as their own separate sentence, though there are some parts that actually fit quite neatly into what comes before. One part also swaps from kanji to hiragana – I accounted for it by changing capitalisation and punctuation.

ticat had this to say about the track on Twitter: “Hello…? Ah, can you hear me? Oh, who am I? I’m Koishi! Ko-i-shi! You don’t know me? You liar! I’ve been watching you the whole time since that day, from behind. You didn’t think it ended back then, did you? Hey, don’t hang up! …Well, hanging up won’t do you any good anyway, you know…”

非公式の英訳/Unofficial translation

It’s 2 AM. The mercury lamp flickers
and at a gloomy intersection
a voice can be heard coming from behind…

Somebody was boasting [There’s nobody there,]
and according [But who spoke?]
to the rumour they told, [Your dreams can come true…]
They were standing there quietly.

An inorganic pushing sound echoes softly.
You can’t turn back after. Does heaven or hell wait at the end of the line?

“Good evening. Um… have you heard?”

Look, look, somebody’s looking.
They’re peeping at you from close by!
I send down traumatic rain, drip drop.
I’m only going to boil one bird today. Hah.

“How do you do? Good evening. Is it raining where you are?”

I was playing hide and seek. Fooling around.

“I’m close by. I’m coming to see you…”

Right next to you…
Yes. Somebody created [There’s nobody there,]
a rumour [But who spoke?]
and according to it, [Meet them and you can’t go home…]
They’ll sneer from behind you. Who are they?

[Listen closer to this requiem. Does it exist? This is the border beyond the telephone receiver…]
It’s nowhere, but it’s over there:
It’s a hallucinatory world. (1)

“Have you noticed me?”

I hear the clattering sound of a knob turning,
A secret at 2 AM, in the dead of night.
I can’t even see shadows, and footsteps resound.
Two birds can’t come here. They cry.

Even if they see my smashed face,
Everyone will stand in a row.
Being cleaved from the head down,
They crawl along the red lights.
From here, to here,
please travel that lost road somewhere.
Thus spoke the heavenly god.
My path back has come unstuck, but
I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine.

I tear things to pieces and mix you and you in.
Red… red… how pointless.
alone in the world. you, i, and dreams…
it’ll finally end. it hurts it hurts it hurts

Still, when I was born
my heart was already wounded.
All I did was hurt someone else.
Will the innocent suffer such a fate?
Well, if you don’t know
then tremble and fall asleep!

“Hey, right now, I’m right by you—”

Ah, bodies and souls are in pieces.
Those lives won’t go back to how they were.
How long will you dream?
Unfair, fair—it’s all relative.
Hello. I’m Mary.
Please, don’t just decide by yourself
that this unbelievable truth is a bad ending!
Today, only one bird will fade away again.
Today, I’ll offer up my sweet sacrifice again.

Translator’s note

(1) 言死 (genshi) is written in brackets next to 幻視 (genshi). The line can also be read as “It’s the world where words die.”

oh god i dont think i can delete or edit a comment on a blog, the comments explain references for non-fans like me and being a non-fan i wouldn’t catch the references anyway solely based on referencin a translation so maybe this request was pointless

No worries! I think it doesn’t let people edit comments as a safety feature, sorry about that. Keep an eye out on my request page and I’d be happy to take on a request when I reopen them! (^_^)

I wanted to say this a year earlier but you know life and sometimes the mood that you’re in, but 隣の隣 is NOT right next to you. Other than the fact that it can refer to next door we can see Koishi enter a house and boil a bird (kill someone, maybe themselves (Mary)…?), so (I had a good phrasing for this but I forgot because I didn’t immediately consult after coming up with one) how about “(By) The door next to your next (door)…” – Aquatheories

Thank you for your comment and for taking the time to think about the song! My view of 隣の隣 is that it’s similar to the 後ろの正面だあれ that we see in kagome kagome – creating closeness by adding more words in. So, ‘next to next’ becomes ‘you as seen by the person who is next to you’ (i.e. you are your neighbour’s neighbour – so in this case, Koishi is actually located where you are).

While ‘right next to the next’ (as seen in the video) and the alternative you’ve proposed are accurate, I think one of the interesting things in the song is the contrast between the words in quotation marks, which create a sense of distance, and the narrative, which creates a sense of closeness. I thought that ‘Right next to you’ preserves that interpretation.

OHHHH that makes more sense now also can you translate Ahoy! 我ら宝鐘海賊団 because I heard it has a lot of IOSYS references (and all the translations I saw I think may have not explained what “odoru Ahoy ni miru Ahoy” is a reference to) and I figured that because you were a big Touhou fan you’d be a perfect match for the song, if you’ve permission to (unless you did it already, or there’s already a good translation of it online)

Pardon me for the bother, but if I’m not mistaken, 通りゃんせ means 通りなさい, so it wouldn’t really make sense to translate the part 「どこかの迷い道通りゃんせ」 as “I /won’t/ let you travel that lost road somewhere”, wouldn’t it?

Hello! Thanks for your comment, and you’re right – I made a mistake with 通りゃんせ. I’ve updated my translation with the correct meaning. Thank you!

Apologies for the bother, feel free to ignore if I’m mistaken here, but shouldn’t もしもし私はメリー be ‘Hello, I’m Mary’ and not ‘What if I’m Mary?’

Thanks for letting me know and yes – looking back on it I now think that もしもし is actually the ‘phone hello’ もしもし and not the word もし repeated twice.

I originally couldn’t get the next two lines to work unless I went with ‘what if’ but I managed to fix the whole section up.

I think this track is referencing the urban legend of Mary. The basic plot is that there’s a girl with an european porcelain doll named Mary, but the girl grows up and eventually throws Mary away. Then, one day the girl receives either a call or a text message that says “I’m Mary. I’m at the park”, followed with more messages like that, with the location getting closer each time. Then she gets “I’m Mary, I’m right behind you”, and when the girl turns around she sees her doll standing there and gets murdered.

That wouldn’t surprise me at all, especially since that’s Koishi’s urban legend. It’s quite chilling, and the PV adds to that atmosphere!

I know you already mentioned on twitter about the PV but for the record here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHcHjcV8SNY

I was thinking about subtitling it (since the translate option is open on the video) but hesitated due to there being some extra text on the PV that adds to the presentation that isn’t just the lyrics. Not sure if you’ll think about revising the translation with those extras or not, but regardless we have more surprise PV goodness.

So exciting!! If I get a chance I’ll look at the extra text. I suspect that it won’t result in any major changes to the translation, but it’ll be good to have it there…!
